Loosing traffic because of domain upgrade?

  • Unknown's avatar

I did a domain upgrade and I am loosing my traffic on statistics. Maybe it is perhaphs my statistics page only shows traffic to my old wordpress domain but I am terrified about traffic statistics after domain upgrading. ¿Should I go back to my old domain?¿Is there any way to get into the statistics those that go to the new domain?

    Hi ralpherns,

When you enable the new domain on your site, it’s expected that your views will drop off for a short time as the domain records are updated across the internet. This is called propagation, and for a short time (up to 72 hours but often less), your site will not be visible to all viewers. That should be resolved automatically, and you should once again see normal traffic.

Thank you jackie for the quick reply.

The issue is that the old subdomain -http://ralpherns.wordpress.com- still answers requests and so both are operative and should be filling the statistics table(?). Instead, the statistics page only seems to show views from one of them missing a lot of views that were there the day before I did the upgrade. Akismet shows nothing at all.

By the way, I did the upgrade on june 17th, about 8 days ago.

Is there a way to fix this kind of problem?

    Hi there,

You have only one set of stats for a WordPress.com site, whether or not there’s a custom domain mapped to the site. So yes, people can access your site at either your wordpress.com address or your new domain, but both visits will be logged into the same set of stats.

Because of the domain change, though, your site would not have been visible for a short time (at either address) because of the DNS records propagation process. Also, stats are not updated immediately, so there may have been some lag in showing the results. It also can take a short time for Google and other search engines to index your site under the new domain.

In other words, it is totally expected behavior that changing your site address will temporarily reduce your visits, but it is temporary. When I look at your stats now, though, everything looks normal. I suspect you will see a rebound effect when you publish the next few posts.

Thank you again Jackie for the answer.

I will wait for a couple of weeks to see if everything becomes normal as before.

One question, shoud I go through all my posts and change every url link to any of my pages?

    Best Regards,

    Rafael

Your permalinks will update to the new domain automatically.
