"lose changes" error message

  • Unknown's avatar

the following error message constantly comes up whenever a page / post is edited and updated. When you then go to view the page / post you get

“are you sure you want to navigate away from this page? If you do, all changes will be lost”

Now the reality is that the changes aren’t lost, but it confuses the heck out the lay people that are trying to update their post on the website.

    Thanks for your help

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

it confuses the heck out the lay people that are trying to update their post on the website.

What do you mean by “lay people”? Only official users of the blog can post to it. http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/

by lay people I mean newbie authors that have permission to edit their post or page on the organization’s site. But for many that is the limit of their capability and they are nervous about doing that.

So when something like this error message happens they don’t know what to do as there is no way out of the loop other than to ignore the error message and they are too afraid the technology to venture into the “unknown” and try things.

This is a service organization comprised of many seniors who are elected or volunteer for positions, but the term may only last 1 year so there is a constant turnover. Also some of the younger people are not computer literate in terms of this type of skill – strangely enough.

This is clearly a bug in wordpress using the coraline theme…don’t know about other themes.

The “Are you sure?” question should only pop up if the blogger has not saved and is trying navigate away from the unsaved post. It should not appear when they click publish.

    (1) Remember to save a draft and close the post when stepping away from the computer.

    (2) If they leave the post open for a long time, they ought to try refreshing the page or browsing to the posts page and re-opening the draft post before they start again. If they are worried about losing work, do a quick copy/paste before refreshing or clicking on posts so they can paste it back in right then if anything goes wonky.

I’ll tag this thread for a Staff follow-up. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

    Hi Mo,

As timethief mentioned, the “Are you sure …?” question should only appear when there are unsaved changes on a post. You said that this message comes up after someone updates a post/page, when they go to view the updated post/page — in that case, the message shouldn’t be popping up.

I’d be happy to look into this and try to sort out what’s going on. If you can give me a little more information about the issue, that might also help:

    • Does this happen to you as well, or just to the users who are authors on the blog?
    • Can you give me an example of a post on your blog where this happened, as well as the user who saw the message?
    • Does you know if it happens in one particular web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer) or in different ones?

The answers to these questions will help me start narrowing down what might be going on here. Thanks! :)

oh crap – I had it explained right in the original post – don’t know how we got to it occurring on publish/update – sorry about that again

If this is still happening on your blog, I’ll be happy to look into it for you. However, I do need some additional information to help me investigate the issue:

    • Does this happen to you as well, or just to the users who are authors on the blog?
    • Can you give me an example of a post on your blog where this happened, as well as the user who saw the message?
    • Does you know if it happens in one particular web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer) or in different ones?

for now consider it just me – I don’t have an easy way to find out about others – they complain of a problem posting but can’t explain

•Can you give me an example of a post on your blog where this happened, as well as the user who saw the message?

any post – but you can play with any of the “private” ones – there is nothing in them

•Does you know if it happens in one particular web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer) or in different ones?

only have IE fully updated for XP-SP3 and Chrome – problem doesn’t occur in Chrome – only IE

    thanks for helping

    Thanks for this additional information!

only have IE fully updated for XP-SP3 and Chrome – problem doesn’t occur in Chrome – only IE

I tried testing this in IE version 8 to see if I could reproduce the behavior you describe, but I wasn’t able to get that message to pop up all the time. It may come up if you click or type in the post editor after hitting the Update button, but otherwise I’m not sure why this is happening for you.

Unfortunately, computers running XP can only update to IE version 8 (rather than the latest version 10). Because of this, you may experience some glitches when using that browser.

We highly recommend using another browser such as Chrome to avoid these issues, and you may want to pass that information on to the other users on your blog. You can find the latest version of Chrome and other popular browsers here:

    I hope this helps!

Chrome has its own issues though not with WP so far as I know. I have not been thrilled with it – like it always opens two copies (known XP flaw for a couple of years now) among other things.

Thanks for trying – there is no editing being done after updating – just any action that goes to a different page such as view post causes the message to appear.
