Lose formatting when editing post
-
When I try to edit a post, I lose paragraph breaks. Has happened about 5 of the last 6 times. I no longer even try now because I’m tired of having to redo all the paragraph breaks.

Hi there!
I’m sorry to hear that. Can you tell me more about what’s happening? Are you creating your post in the new editor or the classic editor? Are you using the text or visual editor? What type of paragraph break are you adding?

I just copy the text of the open Word file, then paste that in the window for new posts. No fancy paragraph breaks. Just breaks. What I’ve always done. Now, with my last two posts, when I go to edit the post, it shows up without the paragraph breaks. So if I do go ahead and perform an edit, I have to re-add all the breaks again.

Hi there!
Thanks for those details! Rich text editors like Microsoft Word add a lot of extraneous code to their documents so that it displays correctly. Because of this, it’s not guaranteed to appear the same when you copy the contents from Microsoft Word and paste it into WordPress.com editor.
One way you can copy and paste text from rich text editors is using the Paste as Text function:
Here are some other tips to avoid messy formatting when copying and pasting:
- write directly to our editor
- use either a plain text editor like TextEdit or Notepad then post to our editor
- use a desktop client to post to WordPress (http://en.support.wordpress.com/xml-rpc/ — including Word 2007 or newer via API)
- use post by email feature (http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-by-email/)
More details can be found here, including how to paste clean text from Word:
