Loss of paragraphing in my post when I visit another website

  • Unknown's avatar

While working on a post, whenever I visit elsewhere online to make a link or paste a url, all my paragraphs disappear, (leaving just one long one) and I have to re-do them. After the post is published, it stays OK. This didn’t use to happen. It is rather annoying. I tried emptying cookies and cache, but no change. Can you help?

  • Are you using the text editor or the visual editor when writing your posts?

Do you open other sites in a new tab? Does this still happen if you click “Save Draft” before viewing another site?

Thanks for mentioning you’ve already cleared you cache. Which browser and version are you using and do you have the same problem using a different browser?

Thank you for your reply. I use the visual editor. I only use the text editor for coded links.

If I open other sites in a new tab, it still happens, as soon as I paste the url.

I always Save Draft before viewing other sites.

I use Safari 5.1.9, I don’t know if it also happens on firefox. There are other problems if I use firefox – it won’t copy paste from my desktop. I have Mac OSX 10.6.8 (snow leopard)

  • Thanks for providing the extra information. I’m tagging this thread for staff to follow up. Please be patient while waiting for a response.

    Hi there,

Our developers can’t guarantee that WordPress.com will work as expected in older browsers. The latest version of Safari is version 7, so we try to make sure everything works at least in version 6 but older than that you may get unexpected results.

If you have any browser extensions in Safari, you might want to try disabling them temporarily to see if that makes a difference for you. If you continue to have trouble with it, and you’re not able to update to a newer version of Safari, I’d recommend using Firefox or another popular browser: http://browsehappy.com/

I’d be happy to troubleshoot the issues you mentioned in Firefox if you’d like. You might also want to try composing your posts in an offline editor: Offline Editing

Please let me know if I can do anything more to help with that. :)

Thank you. What are browser extensions? I will try to update to safari 6.

I’d like you to look at why I can’t copy paste from my desktop into wordpress edit on firefox. But first I will give it another try, and revert to you later today.

Offline editing looks complex. Apart from having to re-do the paragraphing each time I visit another site, everything works ok in wp edit.

You can also try switching to the text editor, selecting all, copy, then paste all the code into textedit, save that, and then update your post. Or visit other sites. If the post gets messed up, then you can copy and paste the code back into the text editor. Go back to visual if you need to, but always save a copy of your code from the text editor.

Or publish new posts as private. When you are finished writing and editing, then change the date and time to the current settings and make the post public.

Browser extensions are things you can install in your browser to add features and functionality. This page has more information about how to find and manage your extensions in Safari 5:

How To Enable & Manage Extensions In Safari 5

I mentioned those extensions because sometimes certain ones can interfere with WordPress.com. However, if you don’t have any extensions installed in your browser, it may just be the fact that it’s an older version of Safari that doesn’t support all of the features on WordPress.com.

In that case, some of the tips Tess mentioned should help you save your work so you can fix it if something goes wrong in the editor.

I’d like you to look at why I can’t copy paste from my desktop into wordpress edit on firefox. But first I will give it another try, and revert to you later today.

Sure thing! It would help to know exactly what version of Firefox you’re using, too. I’d recommend downloading the latest version of Firefox if you’re not already using it: http://browsehappy.com/

Hello @rachelmcr – sorry for my delay in getting back to you.

To continue our topic: when I start a post in Firefox (29.0.1), I am able to copy-paste once from my desktop, to get it started. After that, the “Paste” function no longer appears in my Edit menu. (I use Mac snow leopard). It doesn’t work, whether I am trying to copy from the desktop or from a previous post on my site.

Since last week there are similar problems on Safari. Suddenly the sizer on my visual editor scroll disappeared. There is no way to size it, which means I have to scroll it all the way back to the top, to Save a post. It is the same on firefox. Looking at the forums I understand this may be a change by wp engineers? My problem is that at the same time, the copy-paste function has disabled. “Paste” is there in my Edit menu, but no text or image gets pasted onto the visual editor. This is the case if I try to copy paste from the desktop, or from the same post.

So far, there is no problem with uploading images or making links. As I said last week though, when I visit another site, I lose my paragraphing.

I emptied cache and cookies on safari and reset firefox, but the problem remains. The copy-paste disablement occurs cumulatively after I have worked on the post for a bit, and has never happened before.

Should I reset Safari? I am nervous about losing my bookmarks.

    Appreciate your help! Thanks.

@rachelmcr – just to update you. The issues in my visual editor – failure to copy paste, loss of paragraphing after saving/ visit to other sites, etc – seem to have cleared up. The reason is that my Mac had several updates waiting, I took it to Apple yesterday to check it, and these updates were installed, and things are working better – so far.

May we keep the topic open for another week, to see if the improvement is maintained. Many thanks.

@rachelmcr – Hi. Unfortunately there is no improvement. Paragraphing disappears. It stabilizes when I have published the post. There is sometimes a hiccup with saving my post while writing it. I can only do a copy-paste once in the post, then this fails also.

Resetting my safari didn’t change this, and I cannot copypaste into firefox.

These issues appeared when the sizing of the visual editor was removed last week.

There is nothing wrong with my mac and OS, as I had it checked. Please advise? I am currently working in http://genekeysdiary.wordpress.com but the problem is the same in all my blogs. Thank you.

    Hi Jane,

Paragraphing disappears. It stabilizes when I have published the post. There is sometimes a hiccup with saving my post while writing it. I can only do a copy-paste once in the post, then this fails also.

Could you do me a favor, and try to paste your text into the Text tab of the Post editor? Then click on Visual, and see if you can make any necessary formatting adjustments now.

Additionally, I’d like to know if you experience the same issue in the Google Chrome browser.

We’ll find you a solution. Thanks for working with us!
