loss of quality in header image

I would like to keep the quality of the header image in my blog

    http://www.olabellevie.wordpress.com

but it just won’t work out. I’ve already tried to change the size of the original image to 1200×525, which is recommended for the Pictorico-Theme and also to 2400×1050 in case it would have been to small, but still once on the site it looks terrible.

    Thanks for your help!

What is the original file size? Could you provide a link to the original image?

  • The custom header in Pictorico isn’t really designed for logos – especially logos with text – as the header graphic is scaled larger or smaller depending on the screen size, which may make the logo not sharp.

If you still want to keep it, you could try making the logo itself take up more space within your 1200 by 525 graphic here, but the results still may not be as sharp as you’d like:

You could also try a theme that supports the site logo feature, which is specifically designed for logo display. (List here.)

Nooo! I’m so in love with this theme and everything works out perfectly except this… Is there really no other way to solve this? I imagine the problem is not the logo but the header image in general. Or would this be any better with a photo as a header?

And, don’t get me wrong, thanks a lot for your answer :)

    @ antjesch,

The image https://olabellevie.files.wordpress.com/2015/01/cropped-header-blog-double1.jpg, has fairly low resolution. You could improve the quality somewhat by sharpening it with an editor, but better would be to begin with an image of sufficient quality, and close to the size 1200 X 525, so that not as much quality will be lost in using the header cropping tool. We don’t know what the quality of the file image is.

Or would this be any better with a photo as a header?

Photos are also susceptible to the same image resolution issues.

I tried already all kind of image sizes and also 1200×525. I changed it back to this size now, so I didn’t even have to crop it but it doesn’t change anything about the quality. I have also tried to make the logo bigger within the image, but that does’nt really make it better either. I just wonder why there is even the possibility to use a header if there is no way of making it look ok. Will I just have to say goodbye to the idea of using a header in this theme?

If you take a look at many other sites running Pictorico you’ll see that their headers looks just fine. :-) What the header in Pictorico is not designed to do is accommodate a text-based logo within it, as I mentioned earlier.

You might want to give Cubic a try – it’s a new theme that’s got a similar grid-based front page, and it supports a site logo, which you upload under Appearance > Customize > Site Title.

Thank you, I’ve already thought about that but I don’t really like the coloured filters that show up when you move the cursor on the images. Are there any other themes that feature a grid-based layout and a logo-friendly header in the free version? Thank you in advance!

  • You might want to give Mixfolio or Hatch a try. While those themes don’t support a site logo, the way they implement custom header graphics results in less stretching. I just did a couple of quick tests with your logo graphic and I think it looks pretty good at various screen sizes.

Let me know if you check them out!
