Lost 3 hours of work

Last night I wrote a lengthy blog and about 3 hours of work just disappeared. I know it was Auto saving during the entire time as I’d see it switch between showing saving and saved in the top of the screen. I don’t know exactly what happened. I was hitting the delete button to change a misspelling and then typed the new letters except all that happened was the screen shifted to another tab in my browser and when I went back to the WordPress tab, a bunch of stuff was missing. The undo button no longer was highlighted so it was like I couldn’t even undo what just happened. I looked to see if there was a trash can or something but nothing showed up like the help screen says it should look like. Is there a way to see if the WordPress servers have a version that I can’t access? The history button doesn’t have anything helpful, just 1 even older version.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi hugeholstein,

I can see a draft called “Zion 100k – 2019 Race Report” but that one contains a fair amount of content. What is the name of the post you were working on when the content disappeared?

except all that happened was the screen shifted to another tab in my browser and when I went back to the WordPress tab, a bunch of stuff was missing

If another tab was opened, there’s a chance auto save may have saved the newer (empty) version of the post. But once I know which post you are referring to, I’ll be able to take a closer look.

Yes it’s the Zion 100k. The draft I can see only has about 2300 words. I had another 3000 or so that got lost plus pictures. The pictures are at least still in the media area so I don’t need to upload them again.

It seemed to switch to another tab that was already open in fire fox, not a new tab although things went quickly.

  • @hugeholstein alas, I’m not seeing any extra revisions here.

Did you have multiple tabs open with the same post in the editing view? I’ve seen that happen from time to time and it can cause what you’re describing, unfortunately, since the autosaves get overwritten by the older version that’s open in another tab.

Your best fight against that is to not have more than one instance of the editor open, and to manually save revisions periodically.

There was only 1 tab of WordPress open. The other was an unrelated website.

  • Okay, I must have misunderstood the new tab comments. I’m wondering if the connection had just timed out at some point.

If you are writing long articles (or spending a long time writing) we definitely recommend saving revisions periodically so you’ll have something to go back to.

So the auto save basically does nothing?

  • The auto-save saves to your browser’s storage, but for the most part how that works is outside of our control, and if the browser is closed it will be lost.

As such, I also recommend saving the Draft occasionally as a precaution, and I do that myself too.
