Lost access to admin panel and site URL

Hi, I was trying to change settings in my WordPress account to redirect/change the domain (to have it go to a new subdomain) and entered a URL that doesn’t work– and now its giving me a 404 error message when I try to find my website and I can’t even log in/access my WP account to change the mistake. Can someone help me to get back in?

I found this post and this is the problem I’m having, but I don’t have any coding/web design skills and don’t know how to fix it.

Tried to change domain name, now I can’t access the login page

We’ve been asked to move our website for our community association to a hosting provider that we would be paying for an would have access to. Currently it’s hosted by someone else. I had first planned on changing the domain name of the website first, then migrating it over to the new host. So I logged into the website, changed the site URL, then we changed pointed the new domain to the website. It looks like it’s back up now, but when I try to go to the login page, I get “Oops! That page can’t be found.” I tried using the old domain name and that gave me the same result. I can’t access the WordPress admin page and I don’t have direct control over the hosting tools so I’m really not sure what went wrong here. I read some how-to articles on how to change your WordPress domain name and it seemed fairly simple (change URL under admin panel, point new domain to website and done), but here I am.

I can’t provide any server details as we don’t have access to the cPanel on the current host.

  • Hi there,

You’ll need to contact support at your hosting provider to help you fix this.

Changing the domain on a stand-alone WordPress site like yours has to follow a specific process – changing the domain in Settings is just one of the steps.

You can find the documentation for that process here, though many hosting providers have their own process for this via their hosting control panel, so ultimately contacting your host is best in this case.

Thanks, I was able to fix my issue by following Method 2 here:

    https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-change-your-wordpress-site-urls-step-by-step/

I went into my Bluehost cPanel and into the theme to add the code given. Resolved the issue and made me reconsider changing the domain name! Haha.

  • Glad you’ve got it! Going forward, here’s how best to find help with your copy of WordPress at Bluehost:

It’s a bit different from our services, but there are quiet a few resources out there. Cheers!
