Lost access to dashboard

  • Unknown's avatar

I was in the dashboard (possibly Jetpack, I can’t remember) and changed one of the fields from URL I’m about to shut down to a new one, which is under development, but still up with a placeholder page.
For some reason, this is no longer going to the settings, but to a non-existent page on my new domain, so I can’t make any changes.

    WP.com: Unknown
    Jetpack: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

    Hi there!

We are unable to help because we don’t host your site directly on our WordPress.com managed hosting. Instead, your site is hosted with a different provider on a separate host, and we’re unable to access your site’s backend to take a closer look. But I can get you pointed in the right direction.

You should reach out to your host for help with this issue. Since they’re hosting your site’s files, they also have access to those files and are the best ones to help you fix this issue.

I hope this points you in the right direction.

I appreciate it and I’ll contact them Monday.

Before we part, though, are you able to offer some insight as to what I may have done by changing the URL on that settings page that it now prevents me from getting in there to change it back?

I’ve already restored my entire blog folder on the server to the day before the change and it’s still redirecting to the new URL.
Both URLs start with “blog.” which suggests to it’s  the WordPress configuration change that’s generating the redirect. If I can somehow avoid or eliminate that redirect to get back to that setting page and change it back, that’d be fine.

Alternatively, if I knew what file on my server contains that redirect so I can re-word it, that would also be great.  If it’s just a matter of a specific line of code, I’ve been able to do that before. Thanks.

  • Hello there,

When you change the URL of the site in those settings (paraphrasing) you’re changing where the theme files call functions to and from.

It’s not really a detrimental change, as the files and everything is still in tact, except you can’t see it.

Alternatively, if I knew what file on my server contains that redirect so I can re-word it, that would also be great. If it’s just a matter of a specific line of code, I’ve been able to do that before.

You’d need to check the wp-config file perhaps – but, you’d be best placed to allow the host to reconfigure things as they should be.
