  I’m sorry if I made a mistake and, inadvertantly, created a new thread – and am also sorry that you felt the need to be somewhat peremptory in your reply.
  Does this mean I can leave the Topic for Staff attention now ?

  That’s okay and not to worry. Just go back to the thread with the earlier timestamp at https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/lost-all-comments-on-my-home-page?replies=4#post-2511763 and wait patiently there for Staff help please, as this thread with the later timestamp will be closed as a duplicate.
