Lost blog post due to typing and saving in "text" mode rather than "visual"

I accidentally typed my blog post in “text” mode rather than “visual” and when I saved the draft, I lost everything but the first sentence. Is there any way I can get it back?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Using text mode vs visual mode shouldn’t cause this issue. Using the New Post button in the Reader rather than the post editor under Posts ->Add New in the dashboard does at times.

You can check whether your browser saved an earlier version of the post. Go to Posts ->All Posts in the Dashboard. Find the post you’re talking about and click on Edit. Look for the Revisions module. If you don’t see it, click on Screen Options at the top of the page and make sure it’s selected. There you should find a list of all previous versions of your post that was saved. If you don’t see any revisions there I’m afraid your post is lost. http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-revisions/

To avoid this from happening in future, always create new posts by going to Posts ->Add New in the dashboard. Save your drafts regularly and make sure the page finishes loading after every refresh before clicking anything.

An even safer option is to compose your posts offline using a text editor, word processor or an offline blog editor like Windows Live Writer. http://en.support.wordpress.com/xml-rpc/

Yeah I lost it. Thanks though. It’s dumb that the post editor loses them though, that shouldn’t happen.

  • I’ll tag this for staff to follow up as it might be a bug in the text editor. It won’t get back your post, but may help prevent something like this happening again.

  • Hi there,

I’m sorry that this had happened. For long posts, I would recommend saving copies of your post in stages by clicking on the Save Draft button found inside the Publish box. That way, you’ll have post revisions to go back to in case things go wrong.

Alternately, you can write your posts in a Word Processor such as Microsoft Word before pasting it into your post editor and publishing it. Again, this is one way to have a backup copy of your post and prevent losing all your hard work.

At this point, I’m afraid that there isn’t a way to recover your post. If there is anything else you might have concerns about, please let me know. Thanks!
