Lost blog post versions

  • Unknown's avatar

I forgot I had a blog post draft open on my iPhone – then made a lot of edits on my Surface Pro to the same blog post draft. I clicked save many times during my edits and it seemed to be saving. When I opened the draft on my phone the next morning it was still at an old version – and it didn’t update to grab the edits I made the night before on my Surface Pro. I went in to make a quick note to the draft on my phone (not realizing it hadn’t refreshed and gotten my updates from the night before) and it saved this new minor edit and seems to have overwritten my other edits. I’ve gone into History on both devices and the updates from the night before aren’t even listed – even though I saved many times. Any tips on how to maybe find them in temporary files somewhere? I did look in my browser history and haven’t found anything there yet.

    Hi @username,

Your site is using the self-hosted version of WordPress, and you need to seek help at the WordPress.org forums:

    https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

These forums are for WordPress.com hosted sites only :)

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

    Thanks !!!

Before we turn them away let’s find out what interface they’re using to create the posts. If they’re using the WordPress app, it is indeed a question for this forum.

Could you confirm if you were working on the WordPress app and which site you were editing. This is an issue we have seen before when the post is opened on multiple devices in the editing screen. I don’t know if we will be able to recover anything but if you share the post title we can certainly look in to it further.

Thank you for your offer to help! I was using the iPhone app. On my Surface Pro, I was just logged in via the browser. The post title is DMWL – The Vicious Circle. It is still in draft stage if that makes a difference. I made quite a few edits the evening of 4/9 and as you will see, they are nowhere to be found in the History.

    Thanks again!

  • Thanks @ghein9054fdb985, I’m so sorry. Sadly we’re not seeing anything for 4/9 on our end either. Your best bet is to go ahead and reconstruct what you can.

We will also try to duplicate the issue on test sites here, too, so that we can hopefully solve whatever caused this overwrite for you. Thank you for reporting details so we have a better chance at catching and solving this one.

  • Just updating to let you know I tried duplicating this on my Android (since I personally don’t have an iOS device) and was not able to — all of the drafts stayed. But we’ll have one of our colleagues try it out on an iPhone. Hopefully they’ll be able to spot the problem and work toward a resolution.

Sorry again for the lost drafts.
