Lost CSS

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi all,

I have been creating custom CSS for a website for a friend and it has completely disappeared. I had done the bulk of it yesterday with a pieces left to style this morning. I had checked my design on a couple of different devices yesterday, gone back and forward on a few things etc.
Last night I left it looking pretty good, and all saved. I lost my password and reset it, logged in, still all good.

This morning I logged in and there is no CSS at all. Zero. No revisions. It is all gone, in fact the custom editing box is displaying the intro comment, like I have never used it.

I think I might be going crazy! I spent a day yesterday working on, saving and checking this CSS – why/where has it gone and how can I get it back?

If any one has any ideas that would be much appreciated!

I feel like I should add, everything I added in the CMS (additional pages, menu structures, footer widgets etc. has remained as it was yesterday).

Hi there, is this the site you are talking about, broganganleywellness.wordpress.com ? I visited Appearance > Customize > CSS on that site and clicked the “Revisions” link at upper right and see no CSS revisions at all.

If you are talking about a different site, can we have a link to that site please? If it is another site, then check the Revisions link at upper right on Customize > CSS. All saved CSS revisions should be there and can be reapplied.

    Hi thanks for the response.

That is the site I am talking about and I’m exactly the same, i see no revisions at all but I definitely wrote the CSS yesterday in that site.

    :/

Did you save the CSS? I see a couple of theme changes. What theme was it on?

  • Unknown's avatar

Definitely saved the CSS. I even checked it on a friends computer after I had left the house when I had a sudden thought about something and everything was displaying correctly.

I started out using the Kelly theme but I didn’t (knowingly) change it, if it is showing a change maybe this is the problem?

JD, I’ll ask our team about this on Monday and see if there is anyway we can recover your CSS for you.

Even if you changed themes, any CSS you had for the previous would have been saved as a revision and you can then reapply that CSS if you go back to the other theme. I’ve not heard any other complaints on this, so I’m not sure what is going on. As I said, I’ll dig into it on Monday when all the team is around.

    Thanks so much appreciate it.

I just found I had a minimised window with the old version still displaying, so you can see in this folder, 2 screenshots of how I left the site last night vs this morning

Thanks for the screenshots, and I’ll post back here as soon as I get a chance to talk with the team. I don’t know if we will be able to recover it or not, but I am going to hold good thoughts that we can.

Just following up here to note that if the CSS is not listed in the CSS Revisions section, then it’s probably not recoverable. I’m sorry about that!

In a case like this, the best next step would be for us to help you get back to the point you were at before your CSS was somehow lost. I checked https://broganganleywellness.wordpress.com/ and I see that it still has the green overlay. I also noticed that you had the premium plan free trial before and that trial is over now. If you are still interested in trying out some CSS updates and there is anything we can do to help, please let us know.

you guys so need version control on the css editor! ;-)

There are revisions for CSS. Look at the top right of the Appearance > Customize > CSS panel for the “CSS Revisions” link.
