Lost in Nowell Theme… Help Please!!!

  • Unknown's avatar

Please be patient.. i know little about wordpress but im hopeful i can be guided in the right direction with your help.. here it goes

I bought the Nowell theme because its a perfect layout for what i wanted, i have customized some parts myself but there are some i cant for the life of me find or edit.

I’m currently stuck on 2 major things right now
    1. feature images slideshow on any pages i like
    2. remove footer info from pages and page titles from pages

if you look at the theme Nowell Theme at the top there are 3 images that automatically slide, so far i can only set 1 image on my site as static and gives me no option to add more to create that exact same style… it needs to be added to other pages also

secondly on my pages when i create them and name the pages it shows up on the top of the page, i cannot find a way to remove it and on the bottom of the page it mentions blog at wordpress and the theme name, i wish to remove that with ease

any help would be greatly appreciated right now because this is the major hangup which is stopping me from progressing any further to finishing the site and going live

the site is currently on wordpress.com and is not hosted elsewhere yet.. not sure if that makes any difference to me editing it in any way, it may be a simple fix but right now with everything else i’m trying to perform on the site i have hit a roadblock with these specific tasks

help would greatly be appreciated right now and thank you in advance

    Hi,

    1. feature images slideshow on any pages i like

From the “Feature Content Slider” section of the Nowell theme guide:

Add a “featured” tag to any post or page – or set your own custom tag in the Customizer – to display it in a simple Featured Content slider on the home page.

secondly on my pages when i create them and name the pages it shows up on the top of the page, i cannot find a way to remove it…

This would require CSS Customization. You could submit a separate request on this issue to the CSS Customization support page, or add a “modlook” tag to the sidebar of this topic to call for staff attention.

….and on the bottom of the page it mentions blog at wordpress and the theme name, i wish to remove that with ease

Removing those would be ToS violations. From the WordPress.com Terms of Service points:

Attribution. Automattic reserves the right to display attribution links such as ‘Blog at WordPress.com,’ theme author, and font attribution in your blog footer or toolbar. Footer credits and the WordPress.com toolbar may not be altered or removed regardless of upgrades purchased.

Perhaps I misunderstood. Did you mean to want to hide or delete the titles of static pages from the static pages themselves, or to omit links to the static pages from the header area menu?

If the former, then hiding the title is considered more optimal than deleting it. Hiding post or page titles is done with Custom CSS (as I mentioned above) which is a part of Custom Design, a feature of WordPress.com Premium.

If the latter, then the thing to do is create and activate a Custom Menu, if you haven’t already done so, and omit from it links to anything you don’t want to appear in the menu.

    Correction:
“Did you mean to want to” should have been “Did you mean that you want to…”

Musicdoc1 thank you so much for getting back to me.

for the first issue, i can only seem to set 1 image as a featured image within my wp admin, edit page, add image, feature image. i cannot for the life of me see a section for tags to create featured images unless im looking in the wrong places. i thought it would have been a simple option to select “featured images” and select 3-4 images, so i think im doing this part wrong. Can you specifically guide me the easiest way so i can quicky try… sorry if that is a pain but im just not seeing it or getting this part at all!!

Secondly as for the headers/footers.. i can leave the footers on there if its part of the TOS i have no choice.. as for the header titles on pages.. if its possible to hide the title names then i would have chosen that option but having to pay premium for that may be a bit much right now, ill try and look in to a custom menu and see how that goes

Thank you again for your first rreply

    You’re welcome.

i cannot for the life of me see a section for tags to create featured images unless im looking in the wrong places.

There are no tags which created featured images. In a post or page editor, you assign a featured image at the featured images module, and assign tags at the tags module. The instruction in the Norwell theme guide,

Add a “featured” tag to any post or page – or set your own custom tag in the Customizer – to display it in a simple Featured Content slider on the home page.

    means to either

    • 1. add a tag named “featured” to the post or page that you wish to have its featured image display in the slider — See the “Adding Tags via the Tags Module” section of the Tags support page — or
    • 2. create a different, “custom,” featured content tag (anything other than “featured”) at Customize. I think there will be a section of Customize named “Featured Content” or something like that where you will be invited to create a custom featured content tag.

Note that ordinarily you can’t add a tag to a static page on a WordPress.com site. However, some themes, including Norwell, allow tags to be added to static pages as well as to posts.

…if its possible to hide the title names then i would have chosen that option but having to pay premium for that may be a bit much right now, ill try and look in to a custom menu and see how that goes…

I’m still not sure whether you want to hide the titles of static pages, or to omit links to certain pages from a menu. The first requires Premium, the second can be done easily, and at no cost, with a custom menu.

Well this is becoming fun and games for me lol

I followed the link for tags support page… i think it must be disabled on the theme because it does not show up when creating a page/post! it has the usual page setting, featured image and advanced setting but no tags and categories. i went to wp-admin, pages, tags and added “featured” as a tag and yet when i go to edit my static homepage post, add images to create that feature there is no option to..

i understand if you cant give me anymore information on solving this.. i’m currently banging my head against the nearest wall right now!!

so i’m assuming its either disabled via the theme or wordpress is limited on free. not to sure what other options i have now..

would it be possible to download/transfer the theme on a supported web host allowing me to edit the php files to achieve this?

Not sure what you mean by “static homepage post,” because your homepage appears to be a static page. It’s not a post.

I can’t test the Nowell theme without paying for it, so I can’t test whether a tag can be added via My Sites > Pages, or via the wp admin dashboard in a page editor. If you don’t see a tags module in the page editor you might check in the Screen Options (drop-down at top of the page) to see if there is a tags box that you may check. If it’s there, then checking the box would make the tags module appear in the right sidebar.

I don’t know how you would add a tag to a page without a tags module, so if you can not find the tags module, nor enable it to display at Screen Options, then I would suggest that you add a “modlook” tag to the sidebar of this topic to call for staff attention. As a volunteer I have no access to the administrative areas of a member’s site, but staff does.

so i’m assuming its either disabled via the theme or wordpress is limited on free. not to sure what other options i have now..

It’s definitely a free feature. It might need to be enabled, as I’ve described above. Staff should be able to figure out what’s going on, and get it working properly for you.

would it be possible to download/transfer the theme on a supported web host allowing me to edit the php files to achieve this?

I don’t know. If you choose to call for staff, you may address such questions to the responding staff member.

Musicdoc1 again i appreciate your time and replies, seems i might have to get someone to look at it so i can get 3-4 featured images on certain pages and hopefully resolve the issue quickly

    again.. thank you

  • Hi @thehornsinn2015,

The footer credit needs to stay in place, but I can help you with the slideshow. You just need to add the tag “featured” to pages and posts you’d like to feature. Be sure their featured image is large enough, too. More info here:

aahhh, now i understand fully from that link… thank you so much supernovia. is it possible if i set up a gallery of images on a page i could use certain images from there to show up in the slideshow or hand pick images from my media library or does it have to be each page has 1 image on there i have to tag in order for it to show up?

sorry 2 more questions if i may..

    1. in wp admin when you mouse over links, pages etc it opens a mini side menu.. is that possible for me to do if i require it? i have tried creating a new page and having it as a sub menu but it seems to create a white box directly over the text rather than the menu style to the right

2.would it be possible to download/transfer the theme and content on a supported web hosting site allowing me to have it on another server to edit in the future so i could also use my domain name?

thank you again, that first bit of info you gave me will help and would be even better if its possible to achieve the other requests

    @ thehornsinn2015,

aahhh, now i understand fully from that link… thank you so much supernovia.

I gave the same link in the first sentence of my first post here, followed by the following quote from the Featured Content Slider section of the Nowell theme guide:

Add a “featured” tag to any post or page – or set your own custom tag in the Customizer – to display it in a simple Featured Content slider on the home page.

That didn’t help you, so I later tried to explain more clearly what the two options mentioned here are: “featured” tag added to the post or page editor, or a custom featured content added at Customize.

  • Sometimes it takes a few go-rounds to get it, so no worries. :)

Each post or page can have one featured image. In this theme, those featured images will cycle through at the top of pages. I hope that helps.

    @ thehornsinn2015,

is it possible if i set up a gallery of images on a page i could use certain images from there to show up in the slideshow…

As supernovia indicates, only one featured image can be assigned to a page or post. It should be added at the “featured image” module of the post or page editor. If no featured image is assigned, a featured image probably won’t be drawn from a gallery in the corresponding page/post on this theme. You can easily test that idea.

…or hand pick images from my media library or does it have to be each page has 1 image on there i have to tag in order for it to show up?

You can hand pick a featured image from the media library, or from external files, when you add it via the “featured image” module.
    Two more questions:

…in wp admin when you mouse over links, pages etc it opens a mini side menu.. is that possible for me to do if i require it?

By design, on the Nowell theme, drop-down menus go straight down below the parent item. I don’t believe you’ll be able to change that behavior, though you could probably change the background color of the drop-down menu (from white) with CSS customization.

  • Thanks for catching the ones I’d missed, musicdoc1

    @ supernovia,

You’re welcome. I skipped the second new question in the last post, because I don’t know the answer.

2.would it be possible to download/transfer the theme and content on a supported web hosting site allowing me to have it on another server to edit in the future so i could also use my domain name?

  • @thehornsinn2015 :

It would require a different type of license, and the version for WordPress.org may be somewhat different.

That said, you’re welcome to use your own domain here:

    Cheers!
