Lost my mast and pictures HELP

  • Unknown's avatar

I was messing with the drop down menu on picture on my front page and clicked block my pictures by accident and can’t see anyway of getting them back??? I tried undo…tried old versions…it comes up without the pics.
Absolutely ruined the look od my blog …HELP please!

I have looked at the Media Library etc and I still can’t see any on off switch for pictures. All the pictures have gone throughout the blog. And the Dashboard comes up with only symbols which I guess is related. Just as I thought I knew what I was doing.

At first I couldn’t understand what you’re saying. Now it seems to me that you’re talking about a setting in your browser, not your blog. What browser are you using and what exacty did you do where?

Also, if you’re talking about the blog linked to your username, you could temporarily switch to the middle Privacy option so we can see how it looks.

I am so pleased to see you back! Yes I have already switched to Privacy (only authorised people one …is that alright?) and I’ve messed up even more now.
I did a right click on the upload image icon in the edit tool bar and once again I saw drop down menu with Block images and I thought maybe doing it a second time would unblock it (how it frequently works elsewhere). Instead of that I have lost all the icon images on the tool bar as well!…which just remain as rectangles that tell you what they are are when you hover.
WHAT I DID FIRST: On my first home page I was fiddling looking at the drop down menu from one of the images and wondering what it all meant and accidentally clicked block images …and the whole lot went without a clue as to how to reverse it. Media library shows they are all there, but they won’t show up whatever I do. Am panic stricken…near to tears I have to admit.

  • Unknown's avatar

Ok have switched to the middle one.

    @Panos
Using Firefox 3.6.13 I can plainly see the header and I have clicked into all static pages and see all the images. I think your nuhch is right and this is a browser setting issue.

  • Unknown's avatar

I see all sorts of images –

I think you did the Right Click and “Block Images” with your browser – you will need to find the Undo button for that – you are blocking images from your own site – I clicked on the “Block Images” and they all went away – then I undid things at the top of the screen – was not brave enough to close that option and navigate off your site and come back –

The good news is that your visitors can still see the pictures – the bad news – I am not sure how to undo your not seeing your own pictures

With some luck one of the others here will know how to undo the “feature”

    good luck

I dont’ know what you mean ‘with my browser’…I had the cursor over the pic on my blog and surely that is a drop down from there…so much I don’t understand.
It is Firefox I am using. I will wait for more advice. Thanks.

I just tried clicking as it were off my page at the top and I get a Firefox panel (I see what you mean now…it never occured to me that it was the browser giving me the panel) and there is a bit that under Media has a box saying , guess what…Block images on etc etc…but it is not checked…so I don’t dare do anymore damage.
I really do need help here!

The right click and block images was at least in my case a Firefox Browser feature not a WordPress.com feature. I have seen the same drop down on many sites.

    Try:

Tools – Options – Content – Load images automatically – Click the “exceptions” button and delete the site from the list – Highlight – “Remove site” button

    or: http://www.techpavan.com/2009/08/07/how-to-block-unblock-images-from-websites-on-firefox/

My esteemed colleagues have rendered me superfluous!

FANTASTIC! I am as happy as the Egyptans …and lets face it, it has been a real LESSON to me. It’s all there. WONDERFUL.
As I said at some other point today, WordPress saying you can do a blog in 2 hours does somewhat depend on not making mistakes and knowing HOW.
    THANKS so much all! x

However @panaghiotisadam your wpbtips site did a bunch for me yesterday when I needed to do part of a Post and needed to wrap text around a box of text for better reading and I needed to fix some line spacing on a Page a few weeks ago and I found both answers on your site – so you are an essential part of the team –

thanks much for the info on your site. (yes it was more work to do my own research than just posting the question here – but much quicker)

    You’re welcome everybody.

@Julia: Keep in mind that virtually all changes in your blog dashboard include a finish button (Save, Save Changes, Update, Apply or the like), and the more drastic ones include an extra “Are you sure?” popup. You can’t destroy your blog that easily!

As for doing a blog in 2 hours, well… you sure can, if you mean a blog just as it comes out of the box, and with a couple of text-only posts of the “hi, this is my new blog and I don’t know what I’ll write about yet” variety (I’m not joking, I’ve seen that). And next thing is those users come here and ask how to change the blog title or how to add links (yes, we get those questions all the time). When I started my first blog, I spent one whole day trying themes, and one whole day familiarizing myself with the dashboard. Then I spent days changing things (including making mistakes of course), and a week preparing a dozen posts before going public.

Some things one could bash ones own head about…I should have thought about it being the browser…it isn’t as if I haven’t kidnapped the odd photo …only for reference. It was in the context of my own blog it didn’t occur to me that it wasn’t connected. I can’t tell you how long I spent checking every possibility in the Media Library and using former versions etc back and forth. Oh well, it is an indelible lesson. I did look at quite a lot of themes, but I wanted something simple plus this was evidently up-to-date. It is a tiny bit brutal; being able to see what it would be like with the heading greyed a bit, or even a colour would be nice. But I understand I can’t do that without an upgrade (which I can read here that I would be unwise to have anyway).
But tangentally, why has the Dashboard gone into icons only mode. I can’t see a way of changeing that back. Everything else is OK.
    Thanks enormously.

I make decent money teaching people how to use WordPress effectively. Everyone knows it’s free, but the people who pay me don’t want to spend two years learning how everything works. They just want to KNOW right from the first day.

“why has the Dashboard gone into icons only mode”

If you mean the dashboard sidebar, click on one of the horizontal lines that separate the groups of icons.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks found it…a little almost invisible expand symbol. Mmmmm, Stop complaining Julia.
