Lost (NOT EXPIRED) domain

  I really need some help I am new to all of this, I took over a friends domain that expired, I paid to bring it current and I changed the domain name to popcakez.wordpress.com now the original domain (which I did not want) is still active and the popcakez.wordpress.com is listed as taken (and it is my page that I was setting up) and it is not listed on my account as one of my sites. So now I do not know how to retrieve it, where did I go wrong and how do I fix it. I need my domain back!
