Lost password recovery emails

  • Unknown's avatar

When I lost the passwords for the WordPress admin counsel for the WordPress templates I am using on my websites http://www.jesvir.com and http://www.universityforlife.com, I did not receive the emails when I clicked on ‘forgot password’ even though I kept getting the messages that emails had been sent to me. Fortunately I was able to locate my passwords and make the changes I needed. If I had not been able to find my passwords, I would have need to prove ownership using information that I do not have as it was a web developer that set up the template for me. In case I lose my passwords again, please advise me on how to prove ownership when I did not develop the site and have lost contact with the person who did. Can I get a new activation key etc sent to my email address? Thank you .

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

Neither of those websites are hosted on WordPress.com. They are using WordPress, but the self-hosted WordPress.org software that anyone can download and use at the host of their choosing. Self-hosted websites are not on our servers, and we have no access to, or control over them.

Your site’s passwords are only stored in your site’s database, not with us, and not with Hostgator who is hosting your websites. So, should you ever get locked out of your site you will need to reset the password via your site’s database files directly. You can see a complete article on how to do this on the WordPress.org website, here:

Thank you for the response. I managed to find the passwords this time. I wonder why I did not receive any of those emails when I clicked on “lost password” although I kept getting messages that an email had been sent.
I use Google Apps for work and some emails just don’t seem to get through the Google system.
Thank you very much for your kind feedback.
    Best regards, Jesvir

  • It could be that the recovery email address is not set up correctly in your site’s database. The users in the self-hosted WordPress forums will be better able to help you with that:

Gmail also has a tendency to automatically filter emails that come in, and emails from blogs often get redirected to the Social or Updates folders, missing the inbox entirely. If you have those tabs active in your email account, try looking if the emails didn’t perhaps wind up there.
