Lost Post!

  • Unknown's avatar

I have spent all evening writing a post. I went into New Post rather than through the dashboard. This box which appears above the latest post, does not give an option to save, simply to publish. I clicked to make it full screen when I was working on it, and when I finished I clicked a small instruction bottom left of screen to “close pop out”. I thought I was simply minimising the screen… but the post disappeared ! I need it back please! I have trawled trash/drafts and all the usual places to no avail…

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You may be able to recover an earlier Post Revision. http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-revisions/ Go to Posts > All Posts, hover over the title of the post, click Edit and check the Post Revisions module for previous saved versions of the post. If you’re not seeing the Revisions module while on the editor screen, click Screen Options (top right corner of your Admin page) http://en.support.wordpress.com/screen-options/ to activate it. Then select the post and page modules to include them. http://en.support.wordpress.com/modules/#list-of-modules Then you ought to be able to go here > Dashboard > All Posts > Posts and locate the post and recover it from post revisions.

    Advice:
When you start a new post, add the title, set it to private and then publish it. When you are done with the post, set it back to publish and update it. The problem with posts disappearing when saved as a draft has been around for a while, but only seems to hit a small number of people randomly.

The other choice is to get and use an offline blog client such as Windows Live Writer (Windows) or Ecto (Mac) and then everything is saved on your computer and when you are done with the post, you actually publish it directly from the blog client software.

I have done all of that, thanks but to no avail. There is no trace of it. No revisions. Good advice re setting to private and then publishing it – will certainly do that in future. I don’t know whether to just give up now and re- write it, ( grrrrrrr!) or keep looking….? I am not sure where else to look. I need to restore the page I was working on and undo whatever I did when I clicked ‘close pop out screen’ .

I’m sorry to tell you this but if you cannot locate the post by using the instructions I provided for locating and restoring a post revision, and it’s not in your Trash folder http://en.support.wordpress.com/trash/ then you will not be able to recover it. http://en.support.wordpress.com/trash/#restoring-from-trash

Guess it will have to be a re- write then. I don’t understand why there wasn’t the usual warning screen ‘closing/moving from this page will mean you lose content/ ‘ Just gone. Forever, it seems. Hard lesson learnt. Thanks for trying to help.

If you have been logging in to thw wordpress.com home page and using that “Quick Post” there I suggest you stop doing that. Quick post is for what amounts to twitter-like Asides.

Aside – These are brief snippets of text that aren’t quite whole blog posts. Useful for quick thoughts and anecdotes

Instead, log-in directly to your own blog and create full posts there > http://afeatheronthebreathofgod.wordpress.com/wp-admin/

As far as I know it wasn’t Quick Post. I clicked on the new post in top R corner and it brings a screen up above the latest post. I certainly won’t do it again!
