Lost website

Hey guys, I used to have a website in wordpress (not sure if i downloaded the wordpress or i did on wordpress.com)

I stopped my hosting for a while as my business stopped due to covid and now I wanted to start it again the host company told me they erased the data and my website is not recoverable on their end. They asked me if i have a link where they could download a back up that I may have to set it up again.
I have some document .slq but thats it.
I connected to wordpress but at least here in wordpress.com it seems i have no website.
COuld it be on the donwloaded version? How can I find out?

The host cancelling the website means that the website disappears from the platform where I created it? Also on the process i dont know why my professional email adress is not able to receive emails (but yes it can send emails). I really need to have this email working.

    Any clue?

    Thanks a lot :)

    Cheers

We can’t help you as your site wasn’t running on the wordpress.com platform. If you nor your previous hosting provider didn’t make a proper backup, your site is gone forever.

Ok thank you Staartmees.. Sounds bad :(
Would you have any idea on who to contact to fix the subsequent problem with my email adress?
And if i were to start again a website from scratch would you recommend going either with wordpress.com or .org? (i just need a very easy simple website to show i exist as a travel agency (its a side project i wont invest much time on it)

Thanks a lot for your help!

  • Hi there,

Although as @staartmees correctly points out we do not have a backup on our end, it may be the case that snapshots of your old site can be found in the Internet Archive. What is the URL you used for your previous site so we can look that up?

One advantage to sites on WordPress.com (as opposed to self-hosted .org sites) is that we also offer in-house support for any questions you have. If you are not super familiar with WordPress the value of that support is hard to overstate.

One thing to be aware of is that it is not possible to install plugins on WordPress.com sites unless you have upgraded to our Business Plan (which adds live chat support as well) but what you describe sounds like it might be a very simple site without the need to add plugins so that is a cost you can likely avoid.

If you would like to start a new site with us you can do to that here: https://wordpress.com/start/

If you choose the “wordpress.com” domain option you can start with a free site initially and begin setting it up. You can always upgrade down the road if that makes sense, or keep the site free forever.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Hi Jerry thanks for your message I actually have some news i think, i found a file where i believe there is all the back up of the website. I don t think i can send you a screenshot its a pity.

From there would you recomend to go to worpdress.com or .org?

    Thanks!
    Regards

?? This is the support forum for sites hosted at WordPress.com so staff and volunteers will naturally recommend here as there is far more support than when doing it all yourself (and losing your data).
