Lost widgets with new theme

After changing theme, all my widgets are gone! Can I recover them?
From other posts, I see that in past it has been possible to recover these as inactive widgets, which was done via appearance settings or dashboard. But there now appears to be no access to these! Can appearance settings or dashboard still be accessed and, if so, how? But, more importantly, how do I recover my widgets after changing a theme.
I’ll also mention that I only changed the them because there was a note saying the one I was using (Baskerville) was no longer supported and there was no warning that content may be lost when I updated to the new version (Baskerville 2).

Hello! I am sorry to hear about what you are currently experiencing but I am going to add a modlook tag so that an employee of Automattic can give you some help on this.

OK, I’ve got it sorted and hope the following is helpful to others with same problems and also provides pointers to current issues with WordPress.com, which it would be very helpful to address.
To access the dashboard and appearance > widgets, you have to sign out and log back in, which appears to be the only way of getting to the dashboard. Surely, there is (or should be) a better way, but I can’t find it and, if there, it’s well hidden and far from intuitive.
In the Widgets settings accessed via ‘appearance’ from the dashboard, there are sections at the bottom of the page for ‘inactive widgets’, where all mine had been moved to. It was fairly easy to move these back into the new widget areas allowed by the new theme.
It should be noted that inactive widgets are NOT shown in the widget settings accessed from ‘customise’, which is what you now normally use when editing widgets. Giving access to ‘inactive widgets’ here would be very helpful or at least a note shown to say how they can be accessed, as currently they appear to be completely hidden and, as I found, take some finding. -
Hi, @dmrinfo,
Yes, I have not yet seen the inactive widgets in the customizer, so I have noticed the same thing.
I do want to let you know that you can book mark access to your wp-admin window that would be the:
dashboard and appearance > widgets,
, so you won’t have to log out and back in.
For the site above it would be: dmrecycling.wordpress.com/wp-admin/
I hope that helps in the future.

Thanks Christine.
Good suggestion, but I’m still surprised there isn’t a direct route. There was in past and I had started to fear both the dashboard and my many widgets had gone. It was a relief to find both were only hiding.
