Lost Word formatting when pasting to post (2024)
-
HELP please! I’ve been cutting and pasting from Word since I created my blog 4 years ago, with no issues. Suddenly today, none of the formatting or links are being carried over. All the online references to this issue are from years ago (mostly 2012) so I haven’t been able to find anything that’s relevant. What changed and how do I fix it?
Thanks for your help!

It has never been a great idea to paste text from Word into a website as the two formats are quite different. You may be OK with basic text but not so OK with formatting. It is just as easy to type here in the first instance I find.
Microsoft Word is a fine word processor for producing documents to be shared or printed, with a wealth of print-based options for indexing, and producing table of contents. As a web publishing tool, however, it is a little less than ideal and produces very messy HTML. The same applies when using Google Docs, OpenOffice, or other word processors. Because of this, we strongly encourage our users -
There are several reasons I create and manage my posts using Word, but I won’t bore you with details. The formatting I use is simple … bold, italics, occasional tables, and links to URLs. In 4 years, it’s never been a problem until 2 days ago. It’s time-consuming and prone to error to recreate the formatting it in WordPress.
I’m guessing the last update to WordPress must have included a change which messed this up, a setting perhaps? I’m just trying to figure out how to change it back.
I’d greatly appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!
