lots of domain confusion

i have a domain i created many years ago. i am just not very able when it comes to this kind of tech stuff. i remember all the diffiuclties i had setting up and since it was free, i kept it because it has personal value and importance. i don’t make money off it. i have always wanted to use it for my writing – a creative outlet. the domain name has personal significance and i don’t want to lose it.

i have had my account on wordpress as well but similarly, i don’t know how to make good use of it.

i believe i saw that i can transfer my domain located elsewhere to my account on wordpress. but just scrolling through domain related help choices, i did not see anything that included doing this.

FYI, for my wordpress account and for my above mentioned domain, all i want is a place where my creative writing can live.

    thanks for reading

  • Hi there,

The only sites I see on your @clewshad WordPress.com account when I check on our end are listed here:

    • clewshad.wordpress.com

This seems to be an unused site here on your WordPress.com account. Is it possible you are referring to a site you created under a different login that we are not able to see?  What is the URL of the site you are needing help with?

Happy to check in our system so we can take a closer look.

    hi, staff-totoro,

first another question has just come up. i thought i’d be receiving a notification that there was a response to my question but i havent received one. i just happened upon yours today (12/26). is there something i should do in order to get notifications?

now, back to my original question and i’ll provide some more details because i guess what i said is confusing. years ago i created a website on weebly – not here. i’ve been paying annually to keep the unique domain name and it still exists. i am not very good when it comes to creating websites however and as a result its just been sitting there basically unused. keeping my domain was with a free basic account at weebly but now they have begun to charge . i am thinking it would be better to have that domain on a site like wordpress instead and here on wordpress i do already have an account. it is where that unused clewshad site that you mentioned exists.

so i want to transfer my domain from weebly to here. (it is presently locked but they have provided instructions to unlock it which i will do at the appropriate time. it is just not clear to me that i can actually transfer my domain from there to here. is that possible? and what do i need to do to accomplish it? and of course, is it free? or do i need a paid account? – and is there any other information i might need to know before making the move?

    thanks.

When we reply to your forums post, you will see a notification in the bell icon at the top right of your page when you are logged in under your WordPress.com account. This should be on by default, are you not seeing a notification under your bell icon when you check?

can you share what the domain of your current site with Weebly is? Typically most common domains can be transferred but not all of them so it will help if we can see what you are using now, thanks

hi, the site is called dogagog.com

  • Thanks for the additional info! Yes you can transfer that domain to your WordPress.com account without issue. It’s not possible to set your free WordPress site to a custom address (free sites have to use the wordpress.com URL) but you can use dogagog.com as your site address by upgrading to our Personal plan, which is our lowest cost upgrade.

In addition to being able to use your custom domain, this upgrade will also turn OFF the ads that we show on free sites, as well as increase your media storage to 6GB so you will be able to upload quite a few more images than you might under a free site (which has a 1GB upload limit)

You may also wish to consider the annual option (instead of monthly billing) which has the advantage of providing a free domain transfer. As well, once the transfer is complete we will bump the registration date by one year to give you a free year of domain service.

By the way, you can import your Weebly site here if you wish, so you don’t have to start over from scratch. To do that you can follow the steps here: https://wordpress.com/support/import/import-from-weebly/

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
