Lots of issues transferring URL and email to WordPress

  • Unknown's avatar

I have the following going on:
    1) I registered an URL through GoDaddy.
    2) As part of that, I obtained a Microsoft365 subscription.
    3) I am getting emails with the URL address through that Microsoft 365 subscription. I have one email address that way.
    4) Independently I also have my own Microsoft365 account, purchased through Microsoft.
    5) There are no web pages created in GoDaddy.

    What I want to do:
    1) transfer the URL to WordPress
    2) continue to get emails at my existing email address to work for me, preferably through my existing personal Microsoft365 account, or some other way.

I have reviewed a whole lot of other web pages with advice on how to accomplish all of this. However I have also seen things like one cannot keep the same email once transferred away from GoDaddy etc. and it is not clear in what order I am supposed to do things. I also want to avoid starting this process incorrectly, or in the incorrect sequence, which will create problems.

    Thanks.

    Hi there!

Thank you for reaching out! I’ll do my best to address your concerns.

Regarding the domain, the process depends on when it was registered. If it was purchased or renewed within the past 60 days, there’s an ICANN-required hold for transferring. If you can provide the domain, I’ll be able to look it up and provide more specific advice.

As for the Microsoft 365 issue, it might be a good idea to contact Microsoft support to inquire about transferring your email from GoDaddy to them first. They’ll likely have some domain settings that you’ll need to change for the transition. Since we have no control over how Microsoft handles the email, starting there may be the best approach.

Additionally, if you can share your goals for transferring your domain here, I’ll be better able to advise on the best plan for your needs. Each plan, when paid yearly, includes a free year of domain registration, which would make your domain transfer to us free for the first year. However, each plan level offers different features and benefits, so we can help you make the best choice.

I hope this information helps you get started! Let us know if there’s anything we can assist you with once you’ve spoken to Microsoft. Cheers!

Thanks for the information. Let me just clarify something: your advice is that before I do anything with transferring the URL from GoDaddy to WordPress, I first get the emails to be handled via Microsoft rather than GoDaddy. And then, only once I have done that through Microsoft and I confirm that I am getting emails from them, then only at that point do I start the process of transferring the URL. Correct?

I actually just posted something else regarding how I was supposed to find responses to my original post here. Although I have checked the “Notify me of new replies” box, I received no emails about your response, and I see nothing in my WordPress account about any sort of a reply. I now have a link to this page on my desktop so for the time being I can check for replies through that.

  • Hi there,

That is correct. When you transfer your domain to WordPress.com, we will preserve any existing domain settings that are present at the time of transfer. As long as your Microsoft email settings are correct (at GoDaddy) those will transfer over as-is, and continue working same as they did on GoDaddy.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

    Hi there,

Thank you for your assistance on this. I have successfully transferred the domain and email to WordPress.

So I have another question about this. I would like to access this email through Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Mail (or whatever they call it as there seems to be a lot of interchangeable terms that Microsoft uses). It looks like I would need a Microsoft office or business account to do this, and I cannot use my Microsoft personal account. Aside from that issue, are there any other issues that I should be aware of?

    Thanks.

And PS – I am still not getting notifications of new replies even though I have the “Notify me of new replies” box ticked. I don’t know what the problem is with that.
