Lots of traffic with no referrer links

  I don’t get much traffic on my web site, so when I get 5 times the amount of daily traffic in a matter of hours I’m, of course, excited.
  However, other than traffic being recorded as being from USA, showing up on my counter, and which posts it opened (mostly older posts), there is no data where this traffic was from (no search engine terms and no referrers).
  This happened yesterday on my blog. Each of the posts was visited only once or twice in a period of 5 hours, starting UTC midnight. Note that I’m talking about visits and not views (I had only 1.14 views per visit yesterday). What could it have been?

  Sounds like a crawler or bot that WP just hasn’t filtered out of being counted yet. Happened on my site a few days ago — lots of hits on old posts, but without referrals, and also not recorded on the third-party traffic metrics I use.
