Lovecraft – Can't add pages after parent page

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I’ve been using Lovecraft theme for a while and everything was fine. But sometime last year things changed. I can no longer add a secondary page to a parent page. For instance, I had a parent page called “Books” and I have added secondary pages with several book titles such as “Book A”, “Book B” or “Book C” and each of these pages have in turn pages within them for “Reviews” and “Interviews”.
However I can no longer do this as the sidebar doesn’t provide options for secondary pages within the parent page. What happened to this option and how can I get back to adding pages within a parent page?
    Thanks

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi @shiranirajapakse, are you referring to the page attributes box that allows you to select a parent page?
    https://wordpress.com/theme/lovecraft

The option has moved in the last few years with the newer editor, but here’s where you can find it:
    https://wordpress.com/support/pages/page-options/

    Hi @Supoernovia,

I checked the support pages but what is given in there is not the same as what I have on my site.

The parent pages. If I start typing the parent page in the box, it shows along with other options with the same title. For instance if I type “Book”, every page or even post that has book as the title shows.
Child pages. There is no drop downs for child pages.

    What do I do?

  • Hm, you should definitely see https://wordpress.com/support/pages/page-options/ as an option at https://shiranirajapakse.wordpress.com/

Is this regarding a different site?

  • Unknown's avatar

    No, this is regarding https://shiranirajapakse.wordpress.com

I went to https://wordpress.com/support/pages/page-options/ but this is what it looks like earlier. It no longer looks like this on my page.

According to the support pages in the link you provided, under “Page attributes” there is “Parent page” and arrows to search up or down for a parent page or child page.

On my site under “Page attributes” there is “Parent page” but no arrows to search for a parent page or child page. Instead of the up down arrows there’s a X which is to “reset”. Also on my page the box to search for a parent page with the up down arrows is blank, unlike in the support pages where there is a “(no parent)” already there.

    What do I do?

Thanks for the extra details! It looks like you’ve run into a known issue with accounts that have many Pages that we’re tracking here:

    https://github.com/Automattic/wp-calypso/issues/47052

As a workaround for now, you can access your Pages via wp-admin using this link:

    https://shiranirajapakse.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=page

Then hover over the post you want to set the attributes and click “Quick Edit” and select the correct Parent page in the dropdown and click “Update” to save.

You can follow along on that GitHub issue for any updates.

    I hope that helps!

    @shiranirajapakse,

While the known issue cited by helper-heroponriki might be a factor in your case, some of the issues that you’ve reported appear to reflect normal behavior, which will become clear with my responses below.

The parent pages. If I start typing the parent page in the box, it shows along with other options with the same title. For instance if I type “Book”, every page or even post that has book as the title shows.

If you have the word “Book” in multiple page titles, then every page with that word in the title should appear when you type the word “Book” in the Parent Page field. You should be able to narrow the number of results by adding another word or two there.

Child pages. There is no drop downs for child pages.

Child pages are not supposed to display at Page Attributes. If they’ve ever appeared at Page Attributes, I don’t recall it. Child pages can be identified at the All Pages page via the Calypso admin menu, where they will appear indented below their respective parent pages.

Your description of how Page Attributes presently works matches what I’m seeing in tests. I believe it’s working as designed. The discrepancies between how Page Attributes looks and works now and corresponding descriptions and images in the Page Attributes support page are, I believe, due to the fact that the support page needs some updating.

The “X” reset button is just an option. If you’ve previously set a parent page, then you’d click the “X” before choosing a different page to set as the parent.

What needs updating at the Page Attributes support page? Here are a few obvious things:

    1. As you indicated, there are no up and down carets at the Parent Page window.
    2. As you indicated, instead of the “(no parent)” default, there is a blank field.
    3. Templates is no longer under Page Attributes. It’s now by itself, up above, between “Status & visibility” and “Permalink.”
    4. The “X” reset button is neither mentioned in the support page, nor seen in the relevant illustrations in that page.

    Hi,

I tried it and I still can’t make it work.

It’s fine if I want to save the page under a parent page, but if I want to save it under a child page it just doesn’t work. For example, I have several child pages titled “reviews” that save book reviews under each book I have as a parent page. There is a “reviews” page under each parent page. When I try to save another page under the “reviews” page, it’s confusing to look for the particular review page as there are at present four pages titled “reviews”. How do I know which “reviews” page is the one I am looking for? I don’t want to add the book title next to each word reviews to make it easier to find, because while it may be easier for me to find, it will look silly and rather unprofessional for someone coming to the site.

How is it that it worked so well for so long, but stopped working since last year?

    Hi,
    Thanks for your response.

“If you have the word “Book” in multiple page titles, then every page with that word in the title should appear when you type the word “Book” in the Parent Page field. You should be able to narrow the number of results by adding another word or two there. ”

It’s not that I can’t add another word to identify which book I’m referring to, but when I do, that extra word also appears on the site when someone visits. When someone goes to the parent page of the book and hover over it, they will see child page titled, “reviews”, “interviews”, “about the book” etc. If I add something against each of those words to identify which book it is I’m referring to it will look silly and unprofessional when someone visits the page and sees something that identifies the particular book.

“Child pages are not supposed to display at Page Attributes. If they’ve ever appeared at Page Attributes, I don’t recall it. Child pages can be identified at the All Pages page via the Calypso admin menu, where they will appear indented below their respective parent pages.”

Child pages did appear at page attributes earlier. That was how I was able to work with them. But since late last year they have stopped working that way. Hence the dilemma I have.

  • Hi there,

Child pages did appear at page attributes earlier. That was how I was able to work with them. But since late last year they have stopped working that way. Hence the dilemma I have.

If you visit the wp-admin link helper-heroponriki mentioned above, and edit any page in the classic editor, you will see the familiar page attributes on the right. I’ve shot a video here so you can see that the full list of child pages is available to select from: https://d.pr/v/pDknjL

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

THANK YOU so much. It worked. !!!!

Also thanks staff-totoro for the video.

Going forward, how do I access the classic editor, as I don’t get the option when I enter the site. It’s only if I use the link https://shiranirajapakse.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=page

provided by helper-heroponriki that I can access the page where I can see Page Editor at the top of the page with options for Block Editor or Classic Editor. Otherwise there’s no option.

    @shiranirajapakse,

It’s not that I can’t add another word to identify which book I’m referring to, but when I do, that extra word also appears on the site when someone visits. When someone goes to the parent page of the book and hover over it, they will see child page titled, “reviews”, “interviews”, “about the book” etc.

I meant add another word or two to the Parent Page field at Page Attributes in the block editor, not add a word or words to the title.

If you’re using a custom menu, then you may also change the names of child page items in its drop-down menus, without changing the actual page titles. See the Customize the Menu Item Text section of the Site Menus support page for relevant instructions and a GIF demonstration.

Child pages did appear at page attributes earlier. That was how I was able to work with them.

Yes, if you mean in the classic editor. I’d only been referring to the block editor. Sorry about the confusion.

I forgot to add a link:

See the Customize the Menu Item Text section of the Site Menus support page for relevant instructions and a GIF demonstration.

  • Going forward, how do I access the classic editor

The only way to use the classic editor is via WP-Admin, as explained above.
