Lovecraft Theme-Making Pages Menu Display Horizontally
-
After using the customizer to add a couple of custom menu pages the menu list no longer displays horizontally across the home page. You have to click on an icon with lines at the top left between the blog title and subtitle and the header image. Clicking on this shows the menu, but vertically. I would like to change this back to horizontal if possible. The theme is Lovecraft.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi there,
Here is the documentation for your theme, Lovecraft: https://wordpress.com/theme/lovecraft
And, to confirm, the site you need help with is: https://letancientvoicesspeak.wordpress.com/
As is was suggested in your previous forum post regarding categories, the menu changes to the three lines (sometimes called the hamburger!) when the screen size is smaller. It’s a feature of responsive themes that adjust to the size of the device they’re being viewed on.
Because it is part of the design of the theme, there is no way to change it using the customizer’s menu feature. You may be able to make changes with custom CSS available with Advance Design Customization if you have a Premium or Business plan.
Here is the support page regarding the variety of theme layouts: https://en.support.wordpress.com/theme-layouts/
Does that help? Let us know if you need more information.

Well I viewed it on a 13 in MacBook Pro at home and a 20-something HP (Win7) flat screen at work and it shows that menu with the lines. Could it be that once you put more than a certain number of menu items it no longer displays horizontally and shows the menu items?

Hi there! :)
I took a look at letancientvoicesspeak.wordpress.com on my Mac but am only seeing the mobile version of the menu (the three lines to the upper right) if I resize my screen to be a lot smaller than it is by default.
Is is possible you’re zoomed in on the browsers you’ve viewed the site on? If so, that could be triggering the theme’s mobile display.

Tried looking again at the site just now by typing in the address rather than going to MySites under WordPress.com. The menus all display horizontally the way I want them. Apparently they were hidden before because I was seeing the site thru the Customizer window under the Theme section of the site settings. That’s where I saw the lined menu icon (“hamburger”?) and then clicked on it to find the menus, which then displayed vertically.
It must have gone to the mobile view there because part of the page width was taken up by the cusomizer controls.
I use a Mac at home, so I’ll check it there tonight. If it shows correctly there, we can consider this one solved. I’ll let you know.

Ah, I’m glad you spotted that! You’re right that the mobile version of the menu will be displayed within the Customizer because you’re previewing it at a smaller width (due to the space the Customizer takes up).
If you’re still seeing the issue when viewing the site from your Mac, don’t hesitate to reply back here and we’ll be happy to take another look.

Checked on the Mac just now and when I go directly to the blog address and not via WordPress.com and the site tools, the menus display just fine, horizontally, the way I want them. Apparently seeing them via the Customizer is what caused the confusion. Didn’t realize it would revert to the mobile device view for the site.
I consider this problem solved now. Thanks for all the input, guys.
