MacJournal tags not transferring

  • Unknown's avatar

I write my blog entries in MacJournal and then send the posts to my blogs. The tags I enter in MacJournal are no longer transferring to my WP blogs. I have asked Mariner Software about this and they have not found an answer for me.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Bob,

I just gave this a test on my end, and I was able to get the tags to transfer over correctly. Here are the steps I tried:

    1. Start a new MacJournal entry

    2. Using the Inspector icon, enter a tag or two as shown here:

    http://d.pr/i/1iPQ4

    3. Send the post to my blog. I chose not to publish it immediately. Example here:

    http://d.pr/i/vAyY

    4. When I refreshed my post page, the tag was correctly added as shown here:

    http://d.pr/i/1hU3z

Can you let me know if we’re following the same steps? Also, could you give this another try for me on another post?

For some reason I did not get a notification of your reply.

Anyway, your steps are exactly what I have always done. I just tried it again for a third test and sent the entry to two blogs. The tags did not transfer.

That’s odd – just to confirm, you’re using MacJournal 6. Correct? Can you try disconnecting and reconnecting your site from MacJournal? Also, can you let me know the sites that you posted your test posts to?

Sorry for such a long delay in replying. I got testing a few ideas, including reconnecting to my blogs from MacJournal. I did get it to work for one time and then it would not work and that seemed to be intermittent. In other words, it did not seem to work every time I reconnected. I have been given a beta of the next version of MacJournal which I have not yet had the time to test.

It is certainly strange. I have not finished testing to see if I can either get it working or get it to work and then fail again predictably.

I’ve been unable to get this to fail on my side. If you notice a particular issue/option/route that causes this to fail, please let me know. Alternatively, if you’re in connection with the app developer, perhaps they could help troubleshoot? I tested this on two other third-party apps – Blogo and Desk – and I was able to add tags in both places so I’m not sure that this is a WordPress.com issue. If you identify a specific route that’s causing problems though, please let me know!

Sorry for an even longer break than before. I have been busy with some projects.

I have been in contact with Dan Schimpf who develops MacJournal. The latest is that I have tried the latest beta version of MacJournal and the tags still do not get transferred.

It seems strange that I have this unique problem. Perhaps I am missing something along the way. I’m not sure what to try next.

Did anything change in WP over the last few months? Something that might affect tags?

The idea of reconnecting to my blogs was suggested and I found some notes I made at the time:

I tried the reconnect to WordPress blog idea and had some problems. I could not get MacJournal to login to WordPress. I checked my password app. and KeyChain. I was using the right password. MJ has been able to send posts to WP using the password I had on file. I decided that I should change my WP password. Since I have been continuously logged in to WP I was able to change my password. I logged out of WP and back in. When prompted, I updated all KeyChain entries.

Next MJ froze the Blog Settings window. I could still type and Activity Monitor showed MJ was fine. Then it would quit. This happened a couple of times. I then used the Start Over option in MJ Blog Settings. I have done two of my blogs and done a test. The tags worked. When I tried again, they did not. I tried using Start Over to reconnect MJ to my WP blogs. I have not been able to get the tags to work again. This is really weird.

That’s very weird! Do you happen to have the contact info for Dan? I’d like to reach out to him and see if we can figure out what’s going on. If you could pass along his email address, I would really appreciate it. Please note, the email address will appear redacted in the forums, but it will be visible to staff.

I recently sent him the link to this thread. I don’t know if he had a look. His E-mail is: Dan Schimpf <(email visible only to moderators and staff)>

I am using the very latest beta version which is supposed to handle two step authentication better. The tags didn’t transfer and the post got published, even though I did not check to post immediately.

I even tried to refresh the connection to the blog and MJ said that I needed to set up an application specific password for the two step authentication. I see the setup for the application in WP, but I don’t know how to set and application specific password.

I find it strange that it seems to be only me that is having this issue. Am I missing something simple here?

Thanks so much Bob! I’ll send Dan an email right now. I’m not sure what’s going on to be honest, but I’ll do my best to track it down! The trial version I was using of MacJournal ran out so I’d like to get my hands on the beta you’re using if possible. I’ll reach out to Dan!

    Hi Bob,

I received the beta version of MacJournal. It looks like the tags are correctly transferring for me even in the beta. You can see a whole screencast of my test here:

    http://d.pr/v/14x7Q

It looks like some parenthesis are being added to the tags. I’ve made Dan aware of that.

  • Unknown's avatar

I so my posts the same way and still no tags.

Dan continues to make new betas to test. I have refreshed the connection to one of my WP blogs from MJ and I have started from scratch with the connection. Here is what I get:

This account has two step authentication enabled. Please configure an application-specific password to use with this application.

When go back to WP and look at the Connected Applications I see this:

MacJournal is an application for Mac and iOS that lets you keep a journal, diary, or log. You can also send these entries to blogs.

I’m not sure if this should include something about allowing tags. I don’t see where to set an ‘application-specific password.’

Perhaps solution to the issue I am experiencing lies somewhere in here.

  • Unknown's avatar

I got it!!!! It is a tiny solution. Here is what I wrote to Dan at MacJournal:

Dan, it worked! I got it! You will not believe how simple the solution is.

MacJournal notified me of the new beta, so I have updated.

I saw a screencast that Jeremey posted at WP. I noticed something about what he did. I think he clicked in the Annotations field before he selected to share the post. So, I hit Tab after my last tag and it worked. I tried it again and hit Return after the last tag. Thus, one must click into another field, hit Tab or Return for the tags to be transferred. I have not checked the MJ documentation, but that tiny little detail might be emphasized more to make sure folks don’t have the same problem I have had. Perhaps there is something that you can do in the code so that one of those three actions is not necessary. If not, it is minor, but important that users know.

Now, after months of not posting and still creating content, I have a lot of catching up to do. I might put this story in one of my blog post about the Technojungle and perhaps in one of my books, that is if you are OK with it. I don’t know how much time I will have right now to catch up on my posts because I am doing a revision of my first book.

Thanks to everyone for all your help.
