made a free site, activated it, can’t post

I use wordpress for my university course in social theory. I have just made a new free site. Logged in to wordpress, when I go to the site, the Write box doesn’t appear at the top. This never happened in the past when I got a wordpress.com site rather than a home.blog site.

  • Hi there,

What is the URL of the site you need help with?

Hi kokkieh, this is the site https://soc301spring2020.home.blog/
Eventually, after deleting all my history and cookies from Safari, Chrome, and Firefox, the Write button showed up on Firefox – the next day… and Safari the following day but it still doesn’t show up in Chrome.
My major concern is that the students I am having sign up to use the blog are going to run into this and it’s going to lead to problems with my class (and way too many confused, frustrated and complaining emails.)
    Here’s hoping you see something!

I’ve been using wordpress this way for a decade and it’s only with the new approach to having to choose a topic and getting a home.blog vs wordpress.com site that I’ve started to have problems.

  • Are you speaking of the Write button in the top-right corner next to the profile picture and notifications? That should appear regardless of the site, and whether a site has a WordPress.com address, a .blog address, or a custom domain shouldn’t make any difference.

Are you saying you’re only missing that button when viewing this one particular site? Or is it missing when you view any other sites in your account as well?

Are you using any browser add-ons in Chrome? Specifically, anything that blocks JavaScript code, like ad blockers or anti-tracking add-ons?

Initially, when I made the blog, the Write button you’re referring to did not appear on the page in any of my browsers – S, C or F. There are no add-ons to Safari, as I use it, nor Firefox. There may be on Chrome.

I agree that it should appear whatever the WordPress page name but this is the second semester in a row where I’ve had issues. Last semester, someone at WP was able to change my site from home to wordpress and, immediately, the Write button appeared.

Thanks for the note, I’ll look at Chrome for add-ons.

There aren’t third party ad-blockers or anti-tracking extensions on my version of Chrome. I closed and restarted the browser and still get “Create your website at WordPress.com” and the Get started button at the top… even after I sign in using the three dots on the lower right with the Follow button.

  • On Chrome, make sure that third-party cookies are allowed.

On Safari, is there any difference if you turn off Enhanced Tracking Protection?

Safari eventually came around… I’ll check on Chrome, not necessarily happy about third party cookies. Thanks for this!

  • not necessarily happy about third party cookies

I can understand that. However, for this feature to work correctly we need to be able to detect that you’re logged into your WordPress.com account, and cookies are the only way to do that.

And for any site not actually on the “wordpress.com” domain, that login tracking cookie qualifies as a third party cookie, even if the site is still hosted on WordPress.com, as cookies are dependent on a domain, not on the hosting provider.

It might work to just add an exception for the “wordpress.com” and “wp.com” domains in your browser cookie settings, so you can try that.

Thanks, I’ve made that change to Chrome’s settings but, even after logging out, closing the tab, killing and restarting Chrome… no luck.

At the same time, this difficulty is _another_ reason for me – and maybe others – not to like being moved to home.blog sites.

Last semester, when I was running into these problems, I asked – in a chat with someone at WP – to have the site moved “back” to wordpress.com and lo and behold all my problems went away.

It’s going to be a major obstacle if my Windows students can’t use Chrome, though I hope most already have Firefox… but maybe what doesn’t work for me will work for them. I’ll tell my students who work on tablets to use the app.

This really is leaving me wondering if there’s another platform. I’ve loved WP because – by direct contrast with blogger – it has been so easy to find and grade work by individual students – especially during the crush at the end of the semester.

And now the Write button has disappeared from Safari again. I really hate this shift to home-blog. At least Firefox still works. Here’s hoping it, too isn’t temporary.

  • Hi there,

Did you ever try turning off Enhanced Tracking Protection on Safari? I don’t believe the type of URL is making a difference here. Have you tried logging into your account under a different computer to see if you see the same issue?
