Mailchimp Subscriber Popup Widget – Fix Issue

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello! I love the widget but have discovered that the close-box option doesn’t work when viewing on a Windows laptop using Chrome as a browser. Oddly, it seems to work using Chrome on an Android phone (I know – weird!!) I just wanted people who can fix this to know of this glitch. Otherwise, I love it!! :-) Lisa Allen

  • Hi Lisa –

    Thanks for reporting this!

I have a few questions if you don’t mind answering.

    1. Which site is this issue happening on? Please share the URL.

    2. Which version of Chrome are you using? You can find out by loading http://supportdetails.com/ in your browser.

    3. Does the issue persist if you clear your <a href=”https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-
    cache”>browser cache and cookies?

    4. Are you running any browser extensions?

  • Unknown's avatar

    1. Happens on http://aartiana.wordpress.com and on http://elvenspirituality.wordpress.com that I can tell.

    2. Version: Chrome 54.0.2840.71 – However, a box popped up called Chrome Cleanup Tool – and before running it, I want to make sure it is not spyware or malware. https://www.google.com/chrome/cleanup-tool/ so then I ran it and it wanted to remove Conduit Tool Bars which I never added. I said yes. Weird.

    3. I decided to clear ALL cache and cookies. Because of #2, I was asked to restart my computer, so I will do so and I hope to check if it works.

    4. No.

I also may pass these tips to a friend of mine across the pond who pointed out this discrepancy to me in the first place – perhaps she needs the cleanup too or a new version of the browser, or to clear her cookies/cache.

I hope to try again and report back – thanks!

  • Hello –

I see Thank You above the upper right corner of the Mailchimp popup on aartiana.wordpress.com.

On elvenspirituality.wordpress.com it is a Not Now link above the upper right corner of the popup.

    Do you see those?

Hi Liz! Thanks for that helpful post! In fact – yes I do NOW see those. So, I will send this thread to my friend who may have the same issue as I had. I never use Chrome except that I purchased a sales funnel (not integrated with WordPress as of yet to my knowledge) as it seems to perform best when made with Chrome. Thank you again! :-)

  • @astroherbalist – Fantastic! I’ll be here if you run into any other trouble :)

Thanks @timethief, I’ll leave this thread open!

staff-zinnia, I am also having an issue with this — Firefox 49.02 on a mac.

(And oddly, when I cut and paste the html code from Mailchimp into the wordpress widget, it changes the html code into something entirely different…)

Thanks, and thanks @timethief for pointing me here.

  • Hello annelibby – Can you share the site URL that you need help with? I’ll be happy to take a look at this for you :)

  • Unknown's avatar

staff-zinnia, it’s annelibby.wordpress.com. (and I have another unpublished site where I’d like to use it.)

(I have tried clearing cache. Also, I am running Ghostery and a password manager add-on. I have tried disabling Ghostery and shutting off the PW manager. No joy.

    Thank you so much!

  • Hi annelibby –

There was a visibility setting checked off on Widgets > MailChimp > Visibility that was preventing the widget from popping up.

Now, when you load your site, the widget should populate per the MailChimp settings you’ve chosen. It is working for me. Now, look really closely, above the upper right corner of the pop up there is a ‘close’ link in white text to dismiss the widget. Do you see it?

  • Unknown's avatar

staff-zinnia, what was that setting? and did you change it? Or do I need to change it.

Because I don’t see it — using Firefox, or Safari…

    Thank you so much.

PS Though it would be nice to have this on this blog, I was testing it so that I can set it up on another (not yet set up) blog. So I appreciate any recommendation of templates where this widget might work better?

  • Good Morning –

I see the Mailchimp popup in both Safari and Chrome on annelibby.wordpress.com. The popup takes over ten seconds to show up. The timing is a setting on your Mailchimp account.

When you go to My Sites > Customize > Widgets > Sidebar > Mailchimp — Visibility. This is where you control where the widget is displayed.

If you’re still not seeing the popup when you load the site I suggest clearing your browser cache and cookies: https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache

staff-zinnia, I set the latency in Mailchimp for 5 seconds. So, there’s something that’s not happening right in the handoff.

Also, though I’ve tested it without ad blockers and add ons, I still don’t see it. I’m private browsing though, a problem? (Rhetorical q.)

I really appreciate your time and input. And because I know that the Automattic folks are so user centered, what I’d really love would be for you to pass this along to the right person at wordpress.com (maybe that’s you?) to talk to someone IRL from mailchimp about getting together to issue end-to-end user instructions for the most common use cases. (And tell us when it won’t work, whether there are some templates that are better than others, etc…)

I’m a pretty adept user of both products, and it’s advertised as “cut and paste.” It’s not working that simply.

For now, I’m going to call this non-functional, and see if I can find another solution. Thank you.

And ps to staff-zinnia, I changed the latency to 2 seconds, and tried on Safari, it works there. It looks terrible though.

Not on Firefox, not at all. So again, not ready for prime time.

    Thanks again.

  • The Mailchimp pop up is working for me in Firefox, Chrome and Safari. This makes me think the issue is with the browser extensions. If you disable the extensions and view the site in a normal browsing window, does the pop up work?

  • Unknown's avatar

As far as I can see, one cannot have just a regular Mailchimp form in a widget? This seems strange?

  • compassdesign007 –

That’s correct. The only option is a pop up notification for the viewers of the site. Alternatively, you can add a hyperlink in a text widget in your sidebar.

  • Unknown's avatar

@compassdesign007 – If you look at MailChimp’s own documentation, it will explain http://kb.mailchimp.com/lists/signup-forms/ways-to-add-a-signup-form-in-wordpress and then If You Have a WordPress.com Site

You can use your MailChimp form link here in a Text Widget or as part of a Custom Menu
