    I’m using the free version of wordpress. I figured out how to set up a follow button so people can subscribe and get copies of new posts sent to their emails, but I’m wondering if there’s a way to send a free download/pdf when they first subscribe?

    There are 2 ways that you can set up your blog for followers to receive content. The first is the one that you selected – the Follow blog option offered by WordPress.com. Each time you publish new content on your blog, WordPress.com users will receive an update in their Reader, via email, or both depending on the settings that they have selected as part of their WordPress.com account. Users who do not have a WordPress.com account only have the option to receive posts via email.

    This is a basic method for getting your posts out to your readers. The other option has significantly more flexibility but is also a bit more time-consuming in the set up. There are mailing list services that allow you to collect follower information outside of WordPress and give you more customized options with which to communicate with those followers. MailChimp is one of these options – I manage several different sites and use MailChimp for all of them. The short explanation is that you connect your MailChimp account to your blog feed and MailChimp sends it out on a schedule that you determine. You can also create customized newsletters separate from your regular blog posts and send these out individually or on their own schedule.
