I would like to send my travel blog to my friends via email. Is WordPress the right platform? How can I import emails from my contacts and send my blog to an email list, where the recipients can read the blog and updates directly delivered to their inbox, without having to join WordPress?

It is definitely possible to create a subscription which will automatically send an email to your friends whenever a blog post is published using WordPress.com.

You have several options in which you can do this.
1. You can enable the Follow Blog widget on your site: https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/follow-blog-widget/
2. You can add the Blog Subscription Shortcode: https://en.support.wordpress.com/blog-subscription-shortcode/
Users simply need to enter their email and then accept an invite sent to their inbox to receive emails of new blog posts.

How can I import emails from my contacts
With the three steps I’ve listed, your contacts will manually need to enter their email on your website to subscribe, unless you invite them as a follower. In which case, all they need to do is accept the invite. It will ask them to create an account if they wish to follow via the reader, but at the bottom of the follow form is an option to “Follow by email subscription only”, so signing up is not needed.
