Main Image Set?
-
I create a special title image for each blog I do. When I go to the main page however it just picks a random image from the blog to display. Is there a way to set this in the free version? Thanks!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
You can set a featured image for each post, which will then be the image used on the home page as well as the default image used when sharing your posts to social networks. You can learn a little more about featured images, including a handy video walkthrough of how to set one, here:
Thanks!

Hi there, thanks for the link. I see that it works but with a caveat. I now have a huge title image on my blog post that’s a bit overbearing for my simple blog. It also features a text over the image which seems a bit redundant. I simply would like that featured image to be on the main home page. Is there a way around this? If there is no way around it, is there a particular size I can set my title images for won’t look upsized and low quality? Thanks so much for your help.

Hi @photosthepeeps,
Setting a featured image is the only way to guarantee and manually select an image to display alongside the post on the home page.
The title on individual blog posts is the same size whether or not a post has a featured image, but will appear on top of the featured image once it’s set. This is a design choice made by the theme’s author.
You could change the title or move its position using the Custom Design options that are included in the WordPress.com Premium or Business plans.
If you don’t wish to upgrade then you could consider a different theme, such as Revelar, that displays posts in a grid like way on the home page but keeps the title separate on individual posts.
Let me know if those options are helpful or if you have extra questions.

I’ve been wrestling with the same issue. It would be handy if there were a way to identify (through, say, an HTML attribute or a CSS class or ID) which image is the main, “displayed” image without having to set it as the Featured Image (so you have more control over the image’s placement and layout within each post).

Hi @photosthepeeps, @kmwhitehouse, and @visualsliterals,
I chatted with the team behind the theme about how Cubic chooses which image to display on the home page and found that the first image that has been attached/uploaded to a post will be displayed.
It’s possible to detach an image from a post (and therefore leave on attached image to displayed on the home page) via our older interface.
You can access our older interface by adding /wp-admin to the end of your site’s URL. For example:
http://spesvidere.wordpress.com/wp-admin/
From there, navigate to Media > Library and switch to the List view. You will then find the option to “Detach” an image under the “Upload To” column.
Hope those steps are clear! Please do let me know if questions come up along the way.

Thanks for the reply. This helps to clarify how the process works and does, indeed, seem to provide a possible workaround.
The downside of this (if I understand it correctly) is that on a post like this — https://ontechnologyandmedia.com/2016/08/01/san-diego-comic-con-2016-recap-and-photo-highlights/ — I’ll have detach a total of 23 images, leaving attached only the one image I want to serve as the display image.
This is unfortunate, however, in that it loses all the data regarding which images are used in which posts. It seems to me it would be more effective if there were some way to positively identify which image should serve as the display image rather than having to detach all of those that shouldn’t.
Thanks again for the info.

Hi Kendall,
The site you linked to is using Franklin, not Cubic. Franklin will only display images that you’ve set as a post’s featured image above the post’s title. Images will then display in the order that they have been manually placed within the post’s content.
If you’re using Cubic on another site: The theme was initially designed to only display images on the home page that had been manually set as featured images. Based on feedback, the theme’s author made a change so that if no featured image is set then the first one that’s attached to a post will be used.
You’re right that you will therefore have to detach any images attached to a post prior to the one you wish to use. It is, however, possible to then re-attach the images if you wish to preserve data.
It’s unlikely that further changes to the way images are chosen for use on the home page will be made but your feedback is very much appreciated. I’ll keep it in mind for future discussions with the team.

siobhyb:
Thanks so much for taking the time to respond.
As you note, I’m using the Franklin theme. I’d prefer to not display images above the headline of each post (as Franklin does), but I’d like to see my main, “splash” images displayed in search results and similar places (like when browsing posts in the control panel).
The results in the WordPress search seem to only show an image if you have a Featured Image set. But I don’t want to display the Featured Image in the post, I just want it to appear in the search (and when browsing posts from the control panel, etc.) .
It’s unfortunate that the two are linked. In other words, it would be helpful if there were a way in WordPress to specify which image to use in search results etc. without having to set a Featured Image to display in the blog post.
A possible solution, of course, would be to do the following: Set the featured image, but suppress its display in the post by adding the following CSS (which seems to work for the Franklin theme):
article > .wp-post-image { display:none; }This may be what I ultimately decide to do, but I think it would be more elegant (and, I suspect, less error prone) if WordPress were to disentangle the ability to display a selected image in search results etc. from the requirement set a Featured Image in the post.
Thanks again for your help.

@kmwhitehouse: Ah, I see what you mean! We do try to determine an image to feature in the WordPress.com Reader if there isn’t a featured image set, however, you’re right that there isn’t a surefire way to set it. I’ll take your feedback to the team.
If you have further questions then can you please start a separate thread? It helps us to keep separate concerns/questions to separate threads and will prevent the original poster from receiving further email notifications.
