maintenance of pages

    Hello,

I’m new to wordpress and have some questions with the page concept.

As far as I understand, posts are only posted to the front page, and pages are more or less static objects… Correct?

Is there a way to have a page be constructed out of multiple (rather than 1 large item)? Possible workarounds could be that a page displays all posts from a give catagory (e.g. by adding some code in the page which returns the posts), but can this be done?
Are there other ways that could make maintaining pages easier?
Is it perhaps more recommended to work with categories rather than pages, and provide some category-navigation?

    Thanks!

    Jörg

you can’t make a page to function like the home page because pages are just posts that sit outside of the chronological nature of posts.

however, by using a category widget, when you click on a category, it will open up into a home page that displays all the posts in that category.

Yes, you’re pretty much right. Pages are static and exist outside the structure of your blog; that means they’re great for something like an about page or anything which you don’t want to keep updating. You can’t make a page consist of multiple pages, but you can use links on it which will take you to another page; say, if I have a poetry page, and on it I link to other pages which feature my poems.

Pages don’t use categories, but you can use categories to separate the posts. As soon as you create a category, it creates a separate dynamic page for all your posts which use that category. So if you used a category like writing, then http://yourblog.wordpress.com/category/writing would show only posts to do with writing. So if you wanted particular pages to be linked together, it would probably be easier to write them as posts instead and use a unique category so people can access it.

I hope that’s clear enough. And welcome to WordPress! Have fun blogging, and there are a couple of links below that you might find useful if you’re new. :)

as raincoaster said, giving good advice twice doesn’t hurt anybody (or something like that). ;)

    Thanks!!!!
I’ll experiment with the category stuff.

Is it possible to have some sort of navigation bar (similar in function to the page bar on some themes)?
(I know it is possible to have a category listing as a widget)

Never mind, I found themes that have this and can learn from them. :-)
