Major Problem With Spam Today
-
I don’t know if this is happening to others, but my site is being swamped with spam that Akismet is not catching. I don’t moderate my comments before their published and alot of really tacky comments and trackbacks are getting thru.
I guess I’ll have to turn my moderation on. Is anyone else having this problem?
-
My guess is that bloggers who don’t moderate are seen as an easy hit by spammers, so their attention will be focussed on them. I moderate, I delete…I don’t get much spam (although that could be because my blog is still quite new).
Think of it another way, if you want your message on a wall…..do you waste your time and resources spraying a wall where the paint either does not stick or is regularly cleaned off? Or Pour your attention to an unguarded wall where you’re message gets bigger and bigger with each pass? They may be a pain in the ass…..but they are not stupid.
-
Probably someone new hitting the servers. Please make sure that you’re tagging them as spam. That way Akismet learns. It’s very important.
-
Judging by the same email / IP address combo I get hit with over and over again, I can’t help but picture the Akismet as a slow child like Ralph Wiggum. It may eventually learn to tie it’s shoe laces by the time it’s old enough to vote.
-
Considering that it’s caught 6 million spams just today with a 95+% rate, I have to disagree with you. Link
I think the issue is most folks just hit delete when they see somethign go through the filters. They don’t mark it as spam as Akismet never learns.
Now on the other hand, I could tell you some fun stories about my ex mother in law and her experiences with computers if you want me to. :)

Ahhhh so when it’s shifted into the “suspected spam” area……the term “de-mark” means that it IS spam??? To my logic any that you “de-mark as spam” tells it…..that it’s not spam, and it’s a genuine response.
I just deleted another 9, which I did not “de-mark” because to my logic (and without any instructions as to the upside down thinking) I didn’t want to tell Akismet that spam wasn’t spam. Now I know were all speaking with Aussie accents I can start to “de-mark” them.
-
Hmm, I got seven in the last hour since coming back from lunch.
When it’s in hte moderation queue, (ie /wp-admin/moderation.php) use those check boxes to mark the spam as spam. That way a report gets sent to Akismet for processing and verification.
Where do you see the Aussie accent? My spelling isn’t that bad…
-
i think you’re confused. Spam that shows up in the moderation queue or the regular comments list should be marked as spam. Spam that shows up in the akismet queue should be deleted (or just left for the system to auto-delete in 15 days). If a genuine comment shows up in the akismet queue, de-mark it.
-
The adding of the word “de” in front of something generally reverses the meaning of the word after it. In my mind, it appears in the “spam” section because it has enough flags to trigger that response. It’s there awaiting you verifying it……if it IS spam…..you have to de-mark it as spam……thats like taking the label of “spam” off it…..which should be done to NON SPAM. If it’s already marked as “spam” surely the logic of removing that label is upside down, hence the Aussie accent in the response.
I manually delete them without changing any status, because I assume by the choice of terminology that changing the status tells Akismet that it’s NOT spam. It’s a wording thing……but maybe it should be a little clearer that Akismet have switched the dictionary upside down on their widget…..maybe more people would go against the logic of the wording and report more….meaning it’d be more refined and catch more accurately for ALL of us.
-
Even a simple two lines on that page would help…..
For all correctly identified spam, tick the “de-mark” option before deleting.
For all incorrectly identified spam, no not tick the “de-mark” option before deleting.
-
This is not new to me, infact it’s one the reasons why I like checking my comments regularly, moderate your comments as what Judy suggests. I love reading some spams, it gives me a smile with their robotic-tone comments like “… I came across at this site….” like yeah right. :)

i just used your de-mark terminology without checking what the Akismet queue actually says. If something is in the Akismet queue that is not spam, check the box that says “Not Spam” (which is the only box available to be checked), then click on “De-spam marked comments” at the bottom of the page.
With stuff in the Akismet queue that IS spam, just leave it there and don’t worry about it. It has been caught already; you don’t need to tell Akismet that it was right.
Edit: Dr Mike’s comment at 6:05pm was referring to spam found in the moderation queue, not the Akismet queue.

So by not ticking the “de-mark” box….and either deleting manually or waiting the 15 days for it to delete automatically….it IS confirming it is spam? This helps it learn? Forgive me, but this seems to be confusing me.
Usually words like “de” or “un” have an opposing affect…..so it’s been caught by Akismet and awaits your verification…..it’s already a suspect. Now (if I’m getting this right)…not only do you have to tick a box effectively meaning “un-mark” as spam (meaning its been mis-identified as spam)…but now, it does not matter if you tick or not?
If I take a pen and write on your wall….it is marked yes? If I un-mark or de-mark it (granted the term in this contect would be “clean”) the result would be that I undo the mark….that I remove the mark, yes? It is the opposite to the word it’s joined to.
The bottom line here is that if Aksimet want to call the term Gregorify or Flumtious I really don’t care, all I care about is HOW it works, and HOW to help it correctly identify spam. The choice of wording seems upside down to me…and the instructions offered here are really not much clearer.
Tick it, or untick it before deleting? If it does not matter then why have a box at all?
-
Email services have a “report as spam” or “this is spam” type of option…regardless of whether the spam filter correctly identified it or not, regardless of whether it arrived in a spam folder instead of the inbox. Often it’s tagged with a “report as spam” when you delete anything marked as spam. It kinda makes it clear.
EVERY other service I’ve seen uses the term “mark” yet Akismet use the term “de-mark”
-
Good gawd dirk {grin} the horse is dead – dead – dead and you’re still flogging the corpse ;)
-
lol Fair enough, I’ll just doodlyficate them as they arrive…or is that de-doodlyficate? Nah, it don’t matter….I may just make a pretty pattern, if I get 9 I’ll tick the odd ones and leave the even ones…..I’ll still get more.
In all seriousness though, people expect to have to learn new terminology when using new services….but for those terms to use their own versions of the established language without explanation is kinda a low blow. It’s like suddenly picking the soccer ball up mid game.
Maybe the people at Akismet think none of us understand English, and wouldn’t think twice…who knows, as I said…..the important thing to know is “do I tick or not before I delete if it is spam?”
-
Dirk,
If you de-mark it as spam that simply means that it’s NOT spam. Therefore, the “de” is working exactly as you expect. Akismet decided it was spam, marked it as spam, and put it in the spam queue. If you decided that the message in your spam folder ISN’T spam, then you tick it and de-mark it as spam.
It’s pretty elementary, really. :)

Back to the original topic, I have 53 new spam messages in Akismet since this morning. At least it’s catching them all now.
