Make a site private
-
I’d like my site to be private and have found the right button to do that but I understand that there’s also a box that appears on the front of the site that new people see when they try to sign-up. Can you explain that to me more? I don’t want to miss any new subscribers.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

That is true. The idea behind private blogs is that they can only be seen by the owner and the specific people the owner invites.
We’re you hopping for something else? If so, let me know how you expected a private site to work, and I’ll help you find a setting that better matches your needs.

Super thanks. The articles on the site should only been see by owners of properties in the complex that the blog relates to. We’re just trying to get that to be the case rather than the world at large seeing the info’.

Thanks for the explanation.
Is there any proprietary or sensitive information in the blog posts, or is it mostly just that you don’t want to advertise the site outside of the complex? If it’s the later, choosing the middle privacy option that just hides your site from search engines should do it.
Anyone who had the link to one of your posts would be able to see it (and if you leave post sharing on, your site owners would be able to share with their friends) but no one would stumble upon the site from Google.
If that’s not enough privacy, the only option on WordPress.com is to make the site completely private and sign up owners one by one.
If neither of those options work, you might consider creating a self-hosted WordPress site. The software is very similar but you have a lot more flexibility in terms of who is allowed to see what.

Sensitive and private info’ so I’m sure option one is right but not sure how to “invite” people to the blog.
Also, on another blog I have, I’ve put a sign-up box on the front but I’m wondering where all the sign-ups go? Is there a list collected somewhere I can use to contact people through?

You can invite people to your site by making them “viewers.” The options are on the WP-admin menu under Users>>Invite New. I also included a direct link below.
You’ll invite site owners by their e-mail address. If they don’t already have WordPress.com accounts they will need to create them, but the invite they get will walk them through the process. If anyone gets stuck, or you need more help let me know.

Do you mean the “Sign up for Free Articles” section you have on this site?
https://pippacrawley.wordpress.com/If so, the people who sign up there are your subscribers or followers. If you go to your stats page, you’ll see a box with your followers stats there. You can expand it by clicking on view all.
Let me know if you were referring to a different site, or if you have any more questions!

Hi Maureen, thanks for the advice, I managed to work-out how to invite people to the private site and we’ve gotten lots of uptake – very gratifying.
I have also modified one of my other sites – pippacrawley which I’m now calling “mind smoothies”. I think it’s pretty clever but what do you think? I’d like to alter the (email visible only to moderators and staff) to show mind (email visible only to moderators and staff) instead. I know I’ve done such a thing before but can’t find the bloody button for it this time!
Can you send me a link to the right bit?
Nearly called my blog, Mind Monkeys with reference to your circus blog but chose the other instead.

That is a fun site name! You can change your blog’s url. There are several options for how to do that and they all have slightly different outcomes, so the first step is to read the support document below and decide which way you want to go.

The instructions for moving to the new address are also there so you are welcome to proceed without me, but if you’d like extra help I’m here.

Monkeys are awesome, but I think you made the right call :)

Hi Maureen,
when I publish a post, it goes out to subscribers as an email. Currently, the email is plain, to say the least. Is it possible to make the email look nicer with colours and headers etc… Like a mail chimp type thing?

I’m afraid not :(
You can actually use MailChimp to send your posts to users via RSS though. This is an old tutorial, but it gives you an idea of how it works:
http://blog.mailchimp.com/rss-to-email-tutorial/
Note: In order for this to work you’d need your subscribers to signup for your MailChimp list–and the people who signed up to get e-mail updates directly from WordPress would still get the messages in the format you don’t care for.
I’m significantly less able to help you with MailChimp than I am with WordPress.com questions, but I’m happy to help in anyway I can, so let me know if you have any more questions.
