  How to make featured tiles bright, remove dark overlay?

  That dark overlay is part of the theme design. Things are working as expected.

  In order to change that overlay we’d need to work out some CSS, and the CSS requires an upgrade to the premium plan. That information is at https://wordpress.com/pricing/
