Make header photo full screen on Gateway theme homepage
-
Hi, I’m trying to get my homepage (Gateway theme) to look like the demo… I selected a nice photo but can’t get it to be full-size. I don’t know anything about coding, so though i’ve read some of the forums that say to use
or other code, it doesn’t work when I plug it in. Please help! The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Every theme has a detailed theme description page and this one is at https://wordpress.com/themes/gateway/ That’s where set up instructions for it are found. Make sure you read it closely. The live demo site is at https://gatewaydemo.wordpress.com/
Custom Header ImageAbstract and decorative background images will work best as Custom Header images. The recommended header size for Gateway is 2560 pixels wide by 640 pixels high.
-
Several of the items on the detailed theme description page for GATEWAY don’t work as described:
“If you choose Fixed format, the recommended header size for Gateway is 2560 pixels wide by 1000 pixels high.” (NOPE — DON’T BOTHER TRYING TO GO 1000 PIXELS HIGH. FIXED FORMAT IS THE SAME DIMENSIONS AS SCROLLING FORMAT)
“Gateway allows you to feature up to three Posts or Pages, by tagging them, and then entering that tag in the Featured Content area of the Customizer. Any Featured Images assigned to these Posts or Pages will get displayed in the Featured Content area.” (LOOKS NOTHING LIKE THE DEMO — FEATURED PHOTOS SHOW UP RANDOMLY SPACED ON THE PAGE, NOT IN A ROW)

Use this link to start your own thread https://en.forums.wordpress.com/?new=1 and post the URL of the site referred to.Know that if you have a wordpress.ORG software install on paid hosting we do not provide support for it. That support is at http://wordpress.ORG/support.
WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

I’m answering Vanessa’s question about Gateway theme — although the detailed theme description says you can make it “full size” by selecting “fixed format” that selection DOES NOT WORK. Selecting “fixed format” gets you the same size as the “scrolling format.”The detailed theme description and the demo site should probably be updated to reflect the functionality. But since this is free, that likely won’t happen.

@timethief
I had already looked at the instructions and didn’t find what I needed, hence why I submitted a question- I was hoping for more specific assistance.
@effortlessmovement
agreed, this is way more difficult than i anticipated it being. -
Someone mentioned you can add code for a line break,
, but i tried this and it didn’t work. -
Hi there,
To have your site look like the theme demo, you need to set a static front page and set that page to the Homepage Template. This is explained in detail under the Homepage Template heading in the theme documentation that @timethief linked to.
Your site does not have a static front page, but is still at the default setting of showing the latest posts.
Please follow the step by step instructions under Homepage Template on the theme instructions to set up your front page like the demo site.
https://wordpress.com/themes/gateway/
although the detailed theme description says you can make it “full size” by selecting “fixed format” that selection DOES NOT WORK
The theme instructions do not say you can make it full size. It only says that is the recommended size for the image you use. The large image will only show if you set a static front page with the correct page template, as I explained above. All other posts and pages on this theme will show the smaller image.
The featured content area likewise only exists on a page using the Homepage Template.

@kokkieh — fortunately, I always test a theme before launching it, as often the the step by step instructions are inaccurate at reproducing the demo page. So, after hours of testing, I’m not using Gateway for any of my websites.
ExMple: For Gateway, when you follow the step by step for Fixed Format, the directions say to use 2560×1000 for the header. For Rolling header, they say to use 2560 x 640. In reality, the header that appears for either header choice is closer to 2560 x 320.
It would be so helpful if the Gateway Demo site reflected this — I wouldn’t have spent the hours testing it, if the demo had shown the real header size capabilities.

There are several static pages and blog posts on the demo site that all show how the theme displays the header image on pages not using the homepage template:
https://gatewaydemo.wordpress.com/image-alignment-and-styles/
https://gatewaydemo.wordpress.com/2015/03/24/the-beauty-of-analog-photography/
For Gateway, when you follow the step by step for Fixed Format, the directions say to use 2560×1000 for the header. For Rolling header, they say to use 2560 x 640. In reality, the header that appears for either header choice is closer to 2560 x 320.
Again, the instructions do not say that’s the size at which the image will display. They say that’s the size image you should use for the best final result in terms of how the theme treats the image. And that setting ONLY applies to the homepage template, not to the theme as a whole.

Hello,
I’m trying to upload a new header image but it’s impossible, no matter which size is the image (2560×1000, 2560 x 640…).
I’ve seen here there’s some problems with header image, but I think they are about size, my problem though, is that I can’t change it. I don’t mind if it is smaller but I need to personalize it.Do anybody know if it is something related to premium account? Should I be able to change it with a free profile?
Thank you for your help.
By the way, the blog I’m trying to change is https://festifet.wordpress.com/ -
You don’t need a Premium Theme. You need the Premium Plan, which will allow the developer to add custom CSS to the theme via the Customizer:
The plan is a subscription-based upgrade, so it will need to be renewed every year if you want your customizations to keep working. You can add the plan at My Site ->Plans.

It looks like you have a featured image set on your front page. If you have a featured image, that overrides the custom header.
Click on My Site ->Pages and edit the page that’s set as your front page. In the editor, click the Featured Image option in the menu, and remove or change the image appearing there. Then the correct image should show in your header.
