Make homepage shorter

  I want to make my blog homepage shorter. It’s showing all the post which make it extremely long, I want to make it shorter. Each post should only show a picture and a limited text, and with a “more” or “read more” button. Is that possible? or Do I have to change theme to make it short?

  I have tried the option of showing only summary (settings > reading) for articles in a feed, but it doesn’t change anything. I saw that the theme oxygen is just the way I want. But I don’t want to change into oxygen theme, because i think it is just plain.
