Make post visible by a direct link only?

I’ve had quite a look for an answer but can’t find one.
I want to add a post that is only visible to people I send a link to. As I understand it, making it private means that only people who are registered on my site can see it. I also don’t want to password protect it.
The post wouldn’t be visible on my feed and it wouldn’t be found through a search engine. The only way to get to it would be by a link I would email people. Does anyone know how I could do that?

You have two choices and you have already referred to them ie. private post or password protected post. http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-visibility/
If you do not want to create official users
http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/
and you do not want it to appear in the feed as password protected then do not publish it. Email it to the selected list of folks you want to receive it. -
Thanks timethief. I had a feeling I wouldn’t be able to do what I wanted.
Private posts are only visible to people who can login to my dashboard so that wouldn’t work. I could try a simple password. Password protected posts don’t show up in feeds so does this mean it wouldn’t appear on my homepage (where all my posts go) as well?
I’m essentially wanting to create a post about my family which I want to share with friends and families but don’t want to make widely available. Most of the people who would want to read the post wouldn’t want to follow my blog (it isn’t relevant to them).

If you use a Custom Menu where you control the Pages that show up in the Menu – you can make a Page that will not show up in the Menu – then you can send a link to people –
NOTE – the privacy of it will only last until someone posts a link to the Page on a public site that a search engine crawls
