make website first?

  Hi I don’t know what my domain name should be yet. Can I use the software to build the website for now, than link it to a domain name and hosting plan later?

  Hi there,

  All sites on WordPress.com get a free WordPress.com or .blog subdomain when the site is created, that functions just like any regular subdomain, and your site is fully online and accessible at that subdomain (provided you set it to public). The free address will never expire and will exist for as long as your site does.

  So you can experiment and build your site at that free address, even upgrade the site while still using the free address, and only add your own domain later.
