Making a mother category
-
I know you can make a mother page ( which I haven’t tried ) but how do you make a mother category , I tried and failed.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Create a custom menu and add the categories pages and sub categories pages into it.

Note: What follows is not related to your issue.
I also suggest switching to a newer theme because that one was retired long ago. Retired themes do not support all wordpress.COM features.
See here:
https://wordpress.com/theme/colinear
https://wordpress.com/theme/ablere: switching themes
Themes are just “skins” on WordPress.COM hosted blogs.
Note that switching themes https://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/#switch-themes can be easily done, provided you are logged in as Admin under the same username account that registered the site, you tohttp://NAME_OF_BLOG.wordpress.com/wp-admin/themes.php
*Replace NAME_OF_BLOG in that URL with the actual name of your blog. wp-admin/themes.php
The theme customizer https://en.support.wordpress.com/customizer/ provides a preview function for exactly that purpose ie. so you can view what a theme will appear like prior to changing one.

Here’s more in case you need it.

For editing posts in the new editor see https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/#go-back-and-edit-posts
For bulk editing posts see https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/edit-posts-screen/#bulk-edit
2. To edit/delete categories in your dashboard go to Dashboard → Posts → Categories
http://NAME_OF_BLOG.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=category
* You will have to replace “name_of_blog” with your actual blog’s name in that URL.
3. To edit or delete dynamic category pages in your custom menu go to Dashboard > Appearance > Menus
http://NAME_OF_BLOG.wordpress.com/wp-admin/nav-menus.php

The combined total of categories and tags assigned to any post must not exceed 15 or it will not display on WordPress.COM Categories and Tags pages and in the WordPress.COM Reader. Never assign the same keyword as both a category and a tag as they are considered to be the same for search engine purposes.
