Making a series of sub pages

  • Unknown's avatar

I want to make a update page, but when I want to add another sub page, my other sub page vanishes, whats wrong?

  • Unknown's avatar

I think you need to describe what you’re trying to do more fully. Are you writing posts or pages? What do mean by “my other sub page vanishes”? Also, please link to your blog so we can maybe see what you’re talking about.

    :)

Have a look at my blog – it’s loaded with sub pages – see if it helps – you can even change the ordering of sub pages – though i often use negative numbers to do it: -4, -3, etc. good luck

What I am saying is, when I have a sub page, I try to make another with the other sub page as the parent, but it will make the other sub page that I had previous, dissaper.

  • Unknown's avatar

So, you’re saying you want a structure like this:

    Parent Page
    —Child Page
    ——(Grand)Child Page

But when you add the (Grand)Child Page, the Child Page disappears? Or does it get changed to a Parent Page?

Not all themes treat pages and sub-pages in the same manner. What theme the blogger is using may prove key to determining if and how what he or she intends to do can be done. Perhaps the blogger may find that consulting engtech’s theme reviews of features and known bugs may be a good idea http://engtech.wordpress.com/tools/wordpress/wordpress-theme-reviews/

  • Unknown's avatar

YES! Juby, that is what I am talking about! When I add the Grand Child page the Child page goes away! Can you help me?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hmmm. I only see one page on your blog: “Fun Things to do on Club Penguin” Have you created other pages that we can’t see? If so, try adding the Pages widget to the sidebar so we can see what should be available.

I have to compliment you on having the tidiest CP page i have yet to see. We’ll see if we can get this going for you.

    @judyb12
Which theme is this blogger using? And have you tried to create sub-pages using the same theme on a test blog? I ask because I know that all themes are not the same. Blix will do what the blogger wants but the pages widget must be placed in the sidebar to gain access to the sub-pages.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @tt
He’s using Blix, so i’ll just wait for him to put in the pages widget as i suggested. Thanks :-)

  • Unknown's avatar

    You’re welcome. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

Thank you for the compliments. I added more pages, and I will add that side bar. But what about making those sub pages?

  • Unknown's avatar

Okay. First, make sure you have you parent page(s) set up. Next, go to Manage->Pages and select Edit on the one you want be a child page.

On the right-hand side of the screen, you will see a number of blue boxes that say things like:
    Discussion
    Page Status
    Page Password
    Page Parent
    Page Slug…

Page Parent is the one you need. In that box, you select the page that will be the parent for the current page.

    Click on Save

Repeat the process for the (Grand)Child Page, but select the Child page instead of the original Parent Page to be the parent for this one.

    Click on Save

You should see the Manage Pages list indented for your Child and (Grand)Child pages.

Your sidebar Pages widget should reflect this indentation on your site.

That should work. I would tell you to go look at mine right now (judyb12.wordpress.com) to see how it should look, but my site is jacked from the display issues that have occurred tonight.

    Good luck!

    Hi Judy,
Does this work for Andreas9 as well?
I followed your instructions above, but I cannot see the page called Child Page under the Parent page “Learning Curve Page.” http://gottabkd.wordpress.com/the-learing-curve/

I did add the side bar widget Pages at the left bottom of site but it does not show (“Child”) as an indented page.
Maybe Andreas09 does not support this? The widgets are all there so it should, no?

Also, did you do the same process for your Categories to show up the way they do on your site? Category > sub-category?

    Thanks for the help.

  • Unknown's avatar

Andreas09 does not support this indentation. When you open the Pages widget on the Presentation > Sidebar Wdgets page you would have a checkbox for ‘show hierarchy’ on some themes. Sorry to say that Andreas09 does not.

The regulus theme that judyb12 is using automatically puts the indentation. Some themes allow you to show only parent pages. You can try changing your theme but that theme designer made it so all pages show up with no heirarchy.

You can check out this link on how the different themes act:

Sorry I forgot to answer the second part…Andreas09 does have the hierarchy checkbox for categories.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes @ryan it does, but am I to understand, no indentation then?
I have checked engetechs reviews many, many times, but no offense to engetech, this page does not appear to be updated often enough though. (it does provide hits to the site though :>)
Without up-to-date info, the review becomes moot and non relevent.
Is there someone else with a more up-to-date review blog?
    Thanks

  • Unknown's avatar

WordPress is of the opinion that bloggers ought to explore the themes and features on their own, without the assistance of theme reviews. That is why they have not been provided by staff. And, as far as I know, engtech’s reviews are the only ones available.

Also note that as we can have as many blogs as we choose to have free of charge, we can have a blog where we simply try out new themes, features and innovations without affecting our primary blogs.

Do you have a specific theme and specific question(s) about sub-pages in mind?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes that is correct TT and WP does encourage that… but then again, did you know there is this site that I just now found:
    http://themes.wordpress.net/
So it appears, someone is working on, changing, submitting, reviewing themes somewhere in blogshere.
It may be useful for others as well.
    Thanks.

  • Unknown's avatar

I did not intend that review link to answer all your questions but to help give you a guide and starting point. I am sorry if i confused you. My advice would be to create another blog using the export and import options and called it _________test.wordpress.com where the blank is your current blog name. Use this to try out themes, widgets, etc to get a feel for it without making your readers go crazy.

@gottabkd – That link is also for themes on the wordpress.org software and not wordpress.com version.
