Making another domain my primary site address
-
Hello there,
I’ve been building my first WordPress website with the default wpcomstaging extension. Everything has been going great, however, today I connected the domains I purchased from GoDaddy and when making one of these domains the primary site address, I was no longer able to view the site. Instead, it came up with a privacy error page with the following text:
‘Your connection is not private
Attackers might be trying to steal your information from southernrivermarketing.com.au (for example, passwords, messages, or credit cards).’Can anyone please give me guidance to ensure that these domains don’t break my site?

Hi there!
Thank you for your message.
Your domains were previously not pointing to WordPress.com Name Servers which prevented our system from automatically adding the SSL Certificate to the domains.
I have generated the SSL Certificate for all your domains on my side and it has been added to all of them
You can set your domain as primary by following the steps here: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/set-a-primary-address/Feel free to let us know if there’s anything else you need help with. I’m happy to make some suggestions or share some resources with you.

Thanks Macie,
That did the tricky, however, I have a couple of more issues that are I think tied to my changing my domain name.
The post and page edit view now displays the following as opposed to the normal edit view that was there previously:

At the same time, my unique domain (ie my business) email address, tied to my Outlook account, is unable to display incoming emails. This is the message I received when sending an email from my private email to my business email.

And the Contact Form 7 plugin is not getting sent to my email address.
I believe these are all connected to my domain name change as these issues all happened after this change and I’m hoping you’ll be able to assist.

Hi there!
I just checked your site dashboard, and it seems to be loading fine on my end. Click here to view the screenshot I got from southernrivermarketing.com.au/wp-admin.
Could you try using a different browser temporarily to see how it goes? You can also try clearing your browser cache and see if that helps. Here’s how to clear your browser cache: https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache
At the same time, my unique domain (ie my business) email address, tied to my Outlook account, is unable to display incoming emails.
This is because your domain does not have the required DNS records to connect it to Outlook servers. Please follow the instructions below to verify your domain, which will automatically add the required DNS records:
If you already have an Office 365 subscription, you can use this guide to set up your Office 365 email services with your WordPress.com-hosted domain. DNS records are special settings that change how your domain works. They control what people see when they visit your domain and allow you to connect your domain to third-party services such as an email provider. By the way, did you know we also have an email service? You can check out Professional Email to learn more about this. It comes with three months free of cost.

Thanks Aisajib, I won’t be able to get to your other tips until later today, but I tried clearing my cache and trying a different browser (Chrome and Firefox) and the issue I described above persists. Please note: the dashboard is unaffected. It’s when I try to edit a blog post or page when it occurs.

I purchased a domain in March of this year and it is now defaulting to my previous domain. It is very frustrating and I would like my website to reflect the domain that I had purchased less than four months ago. Thank you.

Hi there!
Please note: the dashboard is unaffected. It’s when I try to edit a blog post or page when it occurs.
Thanks for clarifying that. I checked again, and I can see what you’re referring to.
Upon inspecting further, I noticed there was a major issue showing up from the
trx_addonsplugin on your site. I deactivated the plugin, and the editor seems to be loading fine. Can you check now?You can reactivate the plugin if you really need it, but that may cause the issue to return. And since it’s a third-party plugin, we are unable to troubleshoot why that causes this issue. You would want to reach out to the plugin developer for assistance.
Here’s the error message if you want to pass it on to the plugin support:

I checked this further, and it appears you have a total of three domain connections on this site. Domain connection refers to a domain you connected for free as part of your WordPress.com plan. So none of these domains are registered or purchased from us. But all three are correctly pointing to your WordPress.com site. These are the domains:
- southernrivermarketing.au
- southernrivermarketing.com
- southernrivermarketing.com.au (currently the primary domain)
If you want to change the primary domain, please follow the instructions here:
Your primary site address is the domain that people will see in their browser’s address bar when they visit your site. It is the address you use to promote your website. With a WordPress.com plan, you can set a custom domain as the primary site address. Without a paid plan, all custom domain(s) on the site will automatically redirect to your free .wordpress.com or .wpcomstaging.com site addressFeel free to let us know if you have more questions.
