Making blog temporarily unavailable during major update

I maintain a blog for our bicycle group. I would like to change the theme (from a 2-column to 3-column theme), add a couple of new widgets, and move some of the information to other places on the blog.

Is there a way to “lock” the blog during this time so that it is temporarily unavailable while I’m making the changes, and with a note that tells the viewer the site is temporarily unavailable during these updates?

    Thanks,
    Jen

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Go to settings > privacy and make the blog private while you are making the changes. Then you can set it back to full access when done.

    Thank you very much.

I considered doing that, but thought it might be confusing to visitors who find our blog from searches (as many do), and then never visit again. I wish there was a way to create a custom message to explain why it is temporarily private, so they’ll know to come back soon.

Meanwhile… I’m testing my updates in a “test” blog, and will gradually make those changes in the current blog.

OR: I’m wondering if I could make the test blog look exactly like I want the new blog to look, then export it, and import it into the current blog.

The export/import would only be content, not theme, widgets or CSS changes or anything like that. Widgets and CSS would have to be copied over into the current blog separately. Working on a test blog is a good way to do it though.

When you start changing the Theme and whatever – put a Sticky Post at the top to the effect – we are remodeling and please be patient during construction – just like you see when a store is being remodeled – I think your visitors will be more forgiving than you think. It there are major shuffles of things put a bit of a secret decoder in the Remodeling Post – then after the changes – leave the remodeling up for a while then unstick it but put a link to it with a text widget in the sidebar so someone that has not been to your site in a while can get an update.

    Thanks ‘thesacredpath’.

auxclass: great idea, thanks! I thought of the sticky post, but not sure what you mean about “secret decoder” in the post.

Secret Decoder = = If you move something a long ways or some sort of changing the way something is found just let your visitors know.

If I visit a site that I am a regular of and my favorite whatever is moved and now I have to hunt for it I get a bit upset.

If you are adding functions or features tell them in the Construction Sticky.

    Good luck!
