Making comments on blogs
-
Hello! I hope you can help me. Since Monday of this week, I have been unable to comment and like other people’s posts when I’m not in WP Reader. I am logged in correctly, but as soon as I ‘visit’ sites that are external to WP Reader, I cannot like or comment. When I click on the like button, a blank rectangle comes up and then immediately drops away again. I would really appreciate help to fix this issue. Thanks.

Hi there,
Can you give a link to a site where this isn’t working?
Is it happening only on sites with a custom domain, or is it happening on sites using free example.wordpress.com addresses as well?
On the sites where this is happening, can you see the black WordPress.com admin bar at the top?
Please try clearing your browser cookies, make sure third-party cookies are enabled and not being blocked in your browser, and disable any browser add-ons you have active. Does the problem still occur when you log back in after doing all this?

Hi there,
Here’s the link to my site: https://lindakempwriter.wordpress.com but I can’t provide a link to all the sites where I’ve had trouble as there are too many of them. On the sites where I can’t comment and like there is no black WP bar at the top and they are all custom domain.
Thank you. -
Hmm I seem to be able to comment on that site without issue. You can see here.
What if you try an alternate browser? For example if you usually comment on https://lindakempwriter.wordpress.com in Firefox, what happens if you log in to WordPress.com on Chrome instead, and then try to comment on that site in Chrome instead of Firefox? Do you have the same issue in both browsers?

Apologies, that was the link you gave in your last reply so I had thought that was one of the sites you were having difficulties with.
but I can’t provide a link to all the sites where I’ve had trouble as there are too many of them
Could you possibly list one or two here so we can take a closer look? It would help if we can examine the site you are having trouble commenting/liking on, thanks!
-
Also, about the second part of my reply… do you have trouble commenting on these other sites if you switch browsers?
i.e. you can’t comment on mysite.com in Firefox, but if visit the same site in Chrome, are you able to comment that way? Or same issue in both browsers?
Thanks for the additional info!

Hi there,
Here’s a link to one of the sites that I can’t like and comment on:
and another one:Regarding your browser question, I only use Firefox. I have just tried on Chrome now and am able to click like without any issue.

Thank you for the sites. I can like and comment on them without any problems, so the issue is not with the sites.

This confirms the problem is with your browser.

This indicates that your browser is not allowing us to detect that you’re logged into your account.
Please make sure you have third-party cookies enabled in Firefox. Then clear your browser cookies and log back in.
https://wordpress.com/support/browser-issues/#clearing-wordpress-com-cookies
Also disable any browser add-ons you have installed in Firefox and see if that makes any difference. In particular, if you’re using any ad-blockers, anti-tracking add-ons, or antivirus/malware add-ons, those could be blocking cookies indiscriminately, regardless whether a site needs them to work or not, which would cause this issue.

Thanks for your response.
I never suggested nor assumed the issues I am encountering was a problem with other WP users’ sites but I guess thanks for checking it out.
I don’t understand what you mean by: ‘This indicates that your browser is not allowing us to detect that you’re logged into your account’. Can you please clarify?
I will clear the cookies and all the other suggestions you made.

To comment or like on a site you need to be logged into a WordPress.com account, and we need a way to detect that you’re logged in. We do that via a cookie we save in your browser.
But if your browser is not allowing us to set that cookie, or is blocking us from checking what cookies are present in the browser, we cannot detect that you’re logged in.

OK, so even though I am logged in, when I visit other sites and am taken outside of WP Reader, there is something blocking WP from seeing that I am actually logged in? Is that correct?
Sorry, but my tech skills start and end with opening and saving Word documents! And I’m not even exaggerating :) -

Exactly, yes :)
Or at least, based on the available evidence and the troubleshooting we’ve already done here, that is the most likely explanation.

OK, thanks for your help.
Firefox have apparently added extra tracking/security on sites (got my hubby to help me). I’ve switched them off for the bloggers I follow through WP.
Thanks again!
