Making comments on wordpress.com blogs

I have several blogs on wordpress.com and two self hosted. When I comment on other wordpress.com blogs, I want to be able to choose which of these blogs is linked to my name,so I can choose what is most relevant to that topic.
When I go to one particular blog, I find it automatically fills in my name, email and URL from one of the self-hosted blogs, but when I try to post using that identity, it says I’m not logged in (but I am!) and won’t let me post. So why does it fill in that identity? Sometimes it takes quite a few tries even to post using any identity.
Is this supposed to happen? Is it a setting of the blog owner to only allow people to post who have wordpress.com accounts?
I want to understand how this works, not just because I find it very frustrating and have sometimes had to re-write comments, but also because I don’t want the same thing happening to visitors to my blogs.

The WordPress.com account just has the one primary address, but can you try clicking “change” and commenting that way?
And yes, there is a setting to only allow registered / logged in visitors to comment, but they can be registered through other social media services, too.
but also because I don’t want the same thing happening to visitors to my blogs.
Do you have many users who are using different sites and want to post from the most relevant address?

G’day supernovia, thanks for coming to my aid.
1. Can a wordpress.org user be recognised on a wordpress.com site? Is there any setting that makes this happen, or not?
2. I don’t know about commenters on my sites, and I don’t think it is easy to know, but I would like to make sure.
3. The site I visit is this – https://findingtruth.info – and when I click in the comment box, my details are automatically filled out. The details used seem to be the last ones I used, so they can vary. Also whether they are accepted can also vary. Often my self-hosted site and username are automatically entered, and sometimes they are accepted if I try to post the comment, and sometimes they are not, in which case it asks me to login even if I am indeed logged in to that account, and if I try to re-log in, it won’t accept it.
What I really want to do if I can is to understand how this works. Is there a setting that prevents some of my accounts from commenting? How does WordPress determine what is allowed and what isn’t?

Just to add some information. I tried to post a comment on the Finding Truth blog just now, using my self hosted WordPress login, and it wouldn’t accept it, giving me the message “You are being asked to login because [email account] is used by an account you are not logged into now.” I was logged in, and I don’t see how it could know that anyway since it is a self hosted account.
So this suggests it won’t let me log in using a self hosted account, at least mostly. I am just trying to understand why. Thanks.

Can a wordpress.org user be recognised on a wordpress.com site? Is there any setting that makes this happen, or not?
WordPress.org installations are stored in individual databases, so there’s no way for WordPress.com to automatically recognize those logins. But many WordPress.org users will create a WordPress.com account to utilize Jetpack services. This will be recognized.
But, unless the site owner has locked things down, people should be able to comment with or without account.

If you are logged into your account here, it should use your WordPress.com account details from https://wordpress.com/me/account .
If you are not logged in, it may use details stored in the browser – and those likely would be the last ones you used.
If you not logged into WordPress.com, but you enter the email address of an account that does have a login here, we make you sign in. That helps keep others from pretending to be you.
If you are getting other errors, please let us know.

It is finally working now, but there have been a lot of difficulties along the way. I’ll just report the difficulties in case that helps you debug something, but I don’t need any immediate help now thanks.
1. I have several WordPress.com accounts. I think I can only be logged into one at any time, is that right? So sometimes I create a problem for myself by being logged into to an account that I don’t want to post under. I get the error message but even if I then try to login on the error page, it never allows me.
2. Once I tried to post once, but wasn’t allowed, when I tried again the “Post comment” would change to “Posting” and then just hang up and never post the comment, or it would go to an error screen saying that it was duplicate content. I got round that be adding some new text at the start and then it accepted it.
3. More often than not I cannot post using my self hosted name, email and URL, and I can’t really work out a consistent reason. Perhaps if I log out of all wordpress.com accounts, that might help, but I don’t think always. It would be good to know what allows or prevents this.

If you’d like to work on those one at a time, we can. We’d just need more details for each (which sites? what errors? etc.)
Re: having multiple accounts, my browser supports multiple profiles, so I use that myself. I’d recommend the same. :)

I’m happy to work through things, but I really cannot say much more than I have said. At the moment, I seem to be able to log in using my main wordpress.com account. I think my problems there might have been due to cookies and having several accounts, but I can’t investigate it now because things are working again.
But I just tried to post a comment on the same site using my self hosted site details (email, name and URL) and it wouldn’t allow me.
Before I started, I logged out of my wordpress.com account so I was effectively blank to WordPress. Then I wrote my comment and entered the details of my self hosted site. It took me to the page that says “You are being asked to login because [email account] is used by an account you are not logged into now.” That page has never worked for me yet, so I reloaded the page and posted using the wordpress.com account I didn’t really want to use.
I logged out of the wordpress.com account and tried again with a second comment, entering the details of the self hosted site, and this time (differently to previous, and I don’t know why) I got a different error page with the simple but unhelpful message “Sorry, this comment could not be posted.”
I’m not complaining or trying to get anything changed, I’m just trying to understand why I can sometimes use the details of my self hosted blog, but mostly I can’t, and why I get different error responses to the same action.

@unklee my apologies, I’m not sure how I missed the link to https://findingtruth.info/, but I can see that is a WordPress.com site. If you are logged in as theway21stcentury you should have no trouble posting as such. If you’re trying to post as a different WordPress.com user, or with a different address, let me know which one. You can type the email in plain text here — our software will redact it automatically so only staff can see.

Hello again.
I usually try to log in as theway21stcentury.wordpress.com but my problems seem to arise when logged in as another wordpress.com blog. If I am logged into theway….. I seem to have no trouble, but if inadvertently I am logged into another wordpress.com blog, I try to change and that is when I seem to have problems. But I think I can handle that issue now.
The real problem is that I’d rather login from my self hosted site, http://www.is-there-a-god.info, and I seem unable to do that most of the time.

Yeah, we don’t keep that log in info since it’s a completely separate database. But you could set up a gravatar for that email address & that may do. And if *that* is giving you trouble, let us know what’s happening.

OK, thanks a lot for helping. I went over to Gravatar where I have several emails addresses, including the one for the self hosted site, and I made that one the default, and that seems to work. I’m not sure why it didn’t work when it was second on the list, but perhaps that is the answer.

Well I thought I had it sorted!
But when I tried to post today using the same details that worked yesterday, it continually sent me to the error page that says: “You are being asked to login because [email address] is used by an account you are not logged into now.” It is the same self hosted site, and I am logged in.
I cannot understand it, but I guess the first step is to contact the blog owner again and ask him to check his settings. When I checked previously he said that, despite my getting an error message, the comment had been received but was in his spam folder. But other times (like yesterday) it gets through OK.
I’ll let you know, but this has been a bugbear for me for years, and I’d love to be able to understand what works and what doesn’t.

This gets curioser and curioser. Just now, a few hours after my previous attempt to post a comment, I tried again, and with no change in my login status, it accepted the post. I’ll let you know when I hear from the blog owner.
