Making comments on wordpress.com blogs (cont)

A few months ago I raised a topic that wasn’t resolved, and the problem is occurring again. It is still causing me difficulties.

Basically, the problem is this. I have several WordPress blogs, two self hosted and several on WordPress.com. They deal with several very different subjects. Thus, when I want to comment on someone else’s blog, I prefer to do so using the login for my own blog that is most relevant to the topic. In the main, there are two accounts I want to use, one a WordPress.com account and one a self-hosted account.

Here’s the difficulty. Sometimes the WordPress.com blog I am posting a comment to will not allow me to use my self hosted account, telling me I am not logged in as the owner of that account (even though I am). But more curiously, it is frustratingly inconsistent. Take the present case.

    1. I tried to make a comment on a WordPress.com blog I had never visited before, using my self-hosted account details. It wouldn’t allow me as outlined above. I tried reloading the page, re-typing my details and a few other things, and after about six attempts, I succeeded – but I still don’t know what made the difference.

    2. From then on for a few days, there was no problem. When I started to write a comment, it automatically filled my details correctly and allowed me to post, no problems.

    3. But then today, when I went to the same blog, still logged into my own webpage, my details were not pre-filled and again I was barred from posting. Again, I tried all manner of things, no luck. Finally I succeeded in the strangest way.

I clicked on the blue “login from your WordPress account” button and entered the details of one of my WordPress.com accounts. Then I immediately pressed the “Logout” link and entered my self hosted details that had failed half a dozen times before, and this time it accepted them and allowed me to post!

So maybe I have hit upon a method to solve my problems. So I am not so much asking for help as reporting what seems to be a bug, or an inconsistency, and a most frustrating one which must surely cause problems for other people too (e.g. someone who has a company blog and a personal one).

Just hoping someone at WordPress might be interested to try to resolve this. Thanks.

    Hi there @unklee,

I clicked on the blue “login from your WordPress account” button

Just to be clear, that button is expecting you to log in with your WordPressdotcom account. (temp screenshot)

It sounds like this might be a browser cookie problem. Do you regularly log out of your accounts (ORG and COM) and clear your browser’s cache and cookies? Have you tried posting from a different browser to the one you normally use or in a Private browsing window? https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/

Also, you mentioned in your other thread that your comments went to a site’s spam folder. If you know for sure that some of your comments have been caught as spam on WordPressdotcom sites, the best thing to do would be to contact Akismet directly at https://akismet.com/contact/ and enter the word “spam” in the search box. Then fill out the form and tick “I think Akismet is catching my comments by mistake.”

Let us know if you need more help with this.

Hi Jennifer, thanks for that. I knew the button was for WordPressdotcom, but it was the only way I could get to post, as I described.

But maybe you are right that it is a cookie problem. I will try that next time I have a difficulty. I use both Safari and Chrome on a Mac, and do find sometimes that they can take some time to make a change when I change some CSS on one of my blogs. Thanks for the idea.
