making comments without moderation

  Hello,
  I set up a seminar on my blog and set people up as authors so that they could upload comments and discuss without having to wait for them to be moderated (as with the contributor option). However, this did not happen and I still had to moderate the comments which delayed discussion and meant I (as administrator) kept having to login to approve comments. How can I allow people to make comments without me having to approve them first before they go live?
