Making gallery blocks full width in new editor

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello! I’m just getting to grips with the new editor, and can’t figure out how to make the tiled image gallery full width. On my previous posts before the new editor, if I selected the ‘Image’ format, the tiled gallery would go wider than the text block zone, but now when i choose this option it defaults to a single image rather than the tiled gallery. Thanks!

Hi there, please let us know which of your WPcom sites you’re working on and/or which Theme is involved. Thanks.

    Hi!

Its in the Isola theme, with the free version of WordPress.com

    Thanks!

Hm, I’m running into the same thing on my demo site using the tiled gallery block, and you can see the wide width effect in action correctly on the demo site at https://isolademo.wordpress.com/2011/07/07/touring-the-city/ so I’ve flagged this thread for Staff attention and input. Thanks for your patience while they get back to you.

It would help us to help you to have a link to a post on your site where you’ve added the tiled gallery block as well.

Just coming back to note the option to select the alignment/width of the block in the block’s toolbar is missing. Here’s is what it is supposed to look like according to the support guide:

    https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/tiled-gallery-block/#block-toolbar

And this is what it looks like in my test post

  • Hi there,

That is not a gallery block set to wide width. That is just how this theme displays the tiled gallery, created via a shortcode in the classic editor, if the post is set to the gallery post format – selecting the gallery post format causes the gallery to be treated as the post’s featured image.

I see a gallery added using the tiled gallery block does not get treated as featured image in the same way, but that’s kind of expected – Isola was launched in 2014, long before the block editor was even conceived, and has not been updated to support the new types of code used to create, in this case, the gallery block.

Likewise it does not have any styling for the Wide Width option available in the block editor, so that option won’t appear under the alignment settings if you have this theme active.

I’ve reported the gallery block issue to our developers to see if this is something we will fix, but given the theme’s age I can’t make any promises. Meanwhile, if you add your gallery using the classic block instead, it will still work.

The Wide Width option being missing is expected, though, as this theme does not include any styling for that alignment option.

As long as you set that post’s format to “Gallery”

    Thanks for the clarification @kokkieh

Wow – Thanks so much for your thoughts ! Im glad I’m not just being dim and not finding an obvious button to click somewhere.

I’ll wait a week or two to see if WordPress are interested in spending the time to rectify this, but I suppose given its such an old style they may not bother as you suggest. Perhaps it is time for me to choose a fresh new style (even though I think Isola is still quite clean lined and classic!)

Thanks also Just Jennifer – will try that work around!

You’re welcome. I also tested @kokkieh’s suggestion a few minutes before I posted and setting the post format did the trick.

Thanks everyone for your responses – the work around to insert the gallery using the classic editor worked..

    All the best,
