Making images clickable

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello!

We have a travel blog where we upload a number of pictures with each post. We use the iPhone app and upload the pictures from albums on our phone. We just posted our first new post in over a year and noticed that something changed with the pictures now….they are no longer “clickable.” It used to be the case that after the post was published and you clicked on one of the images, it would open in a new page. Now nothing. After further research, I noticed that now (when I go to edit image) the “link to” category is blank in display settings for each image. It used to auto populate with the link to my wordpress.com/files location for the image. Is there some way to get it to auto populate like it used to?? We really liked it when you could click on the images!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

Can you please confirm the app version you’re using? Also please go to the App Settings section in the app and check which editor version you have enabled.

Can you please take a screen shot of the setting you see after inserting an image in a post as well? Upload that to your media library directly in the Media section in the app, and we’ll be able to view it there.

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply! The app version is 11.1

I can’t seem to follow how to find/do the other things you requested. I cannot find the editor version in the settings section of the app (I got to Me->App Settings->About WordPress for iOS). I also don’t follow what you want me to take a screen shot of exactly. After I insert an image, I don’t see any settings unless I click into the image itself and press “edit”….is this what you want to upload to the media section of my library?

    Thanks again for the help!

  • Hi –

    Try installing version 11.2.

Yes, we want to see what you’re seeing after inserting an image to the post.

When you have the post open to edit, there are ... three dots in the upper right hand corner of the app. When you click on those there will be a new menu that appears. 1. Switch to HTML mode 2. Preview 3. Post Settings 4. Keep editing.

We’re wanting to know specifically what your #1 option says. That will tell us if you are using the regular editing view or the HTML one.

If none of this works, the next best option is going to be to use the help link directly from within the app. When contacting us through that option we can see specific data associated with your site and app set up. That option is found by clicking on Me -> Help & Support -> Contact Us

    Thanks!

So it turns out I am using 11.2 already. I updated the app when it pushed it out. Not sure why I saw 11.1 somewhere else yesterday. It’s the updated app.

When I click the 3 dots, I see a menu that reads 1. Publish Now 2. Switch to HTML Mode 3. Preview and 4. Post Settings and then 5. Post Settings.

    Does that help?

  • Yes, thank you. We’ve done more digging. Can you confirm what steps you’re using when you add images?

We also found this … it’s an enhancement request to add more settings to the media tools on iOS. But that wouldn’t explain why your process used to work and now it doesn’t.

Do you happen to use multiple platforms for editing your site? For example: an app on your phone, a browser on your phone or laptop, etc?

    Thanks!

To add an image I just press the add image button and then select a single image or multiple images directly from my one of my iPhone photo albums. I’ve also tried adding images from my WordPress media library as well to see if that fixed the issue and it didn’t unfortunately. So nothing special – pretty straightforward. This was the same thing I did in the past and it worked fine. Just a new phone and updated WordPress app now.

Also, what I see when I go to edit an individual image is very similar to what is shown under “Hybrid” in the link you provided. So I can add a caption or manually enter a “link to” address. As such, I am able to manually make the images clickable by figuring out the wordpress.com/files address for the particular image and entering it in under the “link to” section…but, as you can imagine, this is very time consuming and not ideal. It used to just automatically populate that for me.

  • @gschultz1 we’ve confirmed that this was an option in the iOS app some time ago, but isn’t currently. I’m noting your request to have that feature added back.

In the meantime, while the interface is different, it may be easier for you to add media items via the web.

To do that on a mobile browser, head to WordPress.com, add a new post, and click the small plus to add an image.

Upload or choose from the media library. Then click the three dots on the right, choose “Show Block Settings” and you’ll have a “Link To” option there. You can select an option then close the box to get back to the post.

Let us know if that helps!

Thank you for all of your help! I’ll try the web version and be on the lookout for the feature being added back to the app. Thanks again!
