Making Money from Blog
-
Hello
I understand that should I wish to sell advertising say via Google AdSense I will have to self-host my blogs.
For clarifications, please confirm that this is so.1) Low on funds, I need to make money. It would be great if I could do this through my blogs
2) I have a very modest following of only 300, mainly via facebook, but would like to push this up to over 1000 and more
3) As stated, I need to make money. Am hoping to freelance as a writer – Can this be done through my blogs. If so, are there any effective methods out there that you could recommend? It would be very nice to hear from you guys

My dear, wouldn’t we all like to make money from our blogs?
I would suggest you start by suggesting what marks you out as being different? Commenting on current events and being active on social media platforms isn’t exactly unusual.

I will actually have a post about how to make money from your blog coming up in April, so absolutely check out http://www.theidioteconomist.com for more on this but…
Plain and simple you don’t have enough traffic to make any real money off of your blog with something like AdWords (unless all 300 of your users like to click ads frantically, and even then probably not). Ads sound like a good idea but unless you are generating really heavy traffic, you won’t even be able to offset the self-hosting costs.
If you are looking for work as a freelance writer, however, then you could go about this a couple of ways. My recommendation would be to use your blog as a portfolio of work. Don’t post frequently, but make sure that what’s there represents the highest quality work you can achieve. Then, add it to your resume or business card or LinkedIn profile or whatever, and tell prospective employers to use it for samples of your work.
Secondly, and this will be harder, commit to the blog long term, use it to improve your writing skills, develop a following based around a unique concept or perspective, and write a book. Growing from 300 to 1,000 followers is harder than you think but still not that hard if you write well and you write consistently. Not to game the system, but posts on current events are more likely (in my opinion) to catch the eyes of WordPress editors and be considered for being Freshly Pressed, which will give a huge boost in followers (but not necessarily in raw traffic). Hope this helps!

Also: use the Stats to see if anyone is actually coming to your blog via Facebook. I originally connected my blog to my personal account and felt great having “hundreds” of followers so quickly. But I realized that most people ignored my posts as News Feed spam. So I created a dedicated page and connected to that. It has way less followers, but I am getting more traffic from Facebook than I was before.

@ mathew
Um, posting on current events is only likely to get you freshly pressed if you write about American current events.
Or a country that WP staff have heard of.

Don’t know enough about the editors process to argue with that. I will say that I have seen popular international events like Sochi or the crisis in Ukraine get Freshly Pressed recently.

Indeed. Thank you folks for responding. The replies that you have given me have helped. More succinctly, it corresponds with what I have brainstormed here at home.
What little traffic I have, I get a regular viewing from facebook, but slightly more from google, hence the ad idea.
My main target audience is WordPress. I did a few seo tests a few months back and noted that the google search engine featured my posts on the first page.
Nevertheless, It was very good of you to respond. Thank you.

How are you expecting to monetize your readership? If you write about current events, your competition is every media site in the world.
